The Unholy Consult / Re: [TUC Spoilers] Psalm of Imimorûl
« on: September 01, 2017, 07:02:20 pm »
I was just reading this again, and one line has me confused.

"the myriads that bolt through this blessed hair".

...the Nonmen don't have any whatsoever.

Nice catch!  Makes me wonder if they had hair before the Inoculation; chemotherepies often causes alopecia, maybe it was the same for the Inoculation?  And after it was administered, they didn't regrow those cells...

When were the sranc created? If they existed before the Inoculation (I don't remember that now) the Nonmen were already bald, because I asume the sranc were created hairless.

Reading Vance I had some kind of involuntary memory (like Proust) and I returned in a way to my first LOTR reading. I had the same pleasure and awe in front of a piece of major art. So it happens to me again with these books of the New Sun.

Worst case scenario: morlocks and eloi. But eloi with nukes and superpowers.

Or even worst, weapon races like sranc going medieval with our asses.

It's true that Wolfe uses some weird words and invents some more. But when you have read some chapters the book has you, and with a decent dictionary (I just use some on internet, even google) it's not a problem, but a pleasure.
I specially love the greek, roman and medieval military terms in the text, and the use of names of extinct species for the flora and fauna of Urth.
I enjoy a lot the books of Lyonesse and Dying Earth of Vance, Wolfe has a certain reminiscence of them, a peculiar taste that has made me read with any pause.

The Unholy Consult / Re: Did The False Sun spoil TUC for you?
« on: August 31, 2017, 05:34:36 pm »
The tale didn't spoil TUC at all for me. It is only now, after reading it several times, that in an indirect way some things could have other meanings and implications.
Maybe it is only a posteriori spoiler, noticed only when you have read both stories. Anyway, nothing that troubles me, the more Atrocity Tales we have the better.

Last night I ended The Shadow of the Torturer. Terrific story, amazing setting and a glorious style.
In some way it reminds me the tales of Cugel in the Dying Earth stories by Jack Vance.

I've just started the second book The Claw of the Conciliator.

Can we expect some metagnosis in the next Zaudunyanicon? :P

You do realize that Cnaiur is gay, right?  That's one of the major subversion of his uber-barbarian character. He's a smart barbarian that's crazy, yippee - been done. But he's also gay and extremely emotional conflicted and confused about it, self conscious, drives a lot of his self-loathing and his extreme need to the-most-violent-of-all-men, etc. etc. Its basically core to his character identity... So, better question, why would he want to have sex with a female skin spy, and why have you missed this major part of his character for so long?

Totally agreed. I've always thought that this was absolutely brilliant. Cnaiur is one of the most complex and best constructed characters ever seen in fantasy books.

Yes, if he truly believes that he should do it.
But I think that he is a kind of optimistic compulsive man and he's still believing that he will be able to square the circle.

I hope that he at least will finish WoW (maybe in 2019), but with DoS I haven't the same hope.

It seems (for what he posts in his Not-a-blog) the he's now more devoted to his Targaryen History Book than to WoW. And that is very likely because if HBO is going to make a spin-off Martin will want to at least give them some material to work from.

And George remains silent. I think that he will not end WOW before 2019.
I am fucking tired of ASOIAF, I start reading the books in 2005, too much time to be stuck in this point (fuck the 5 years gap and the meereenese knot).

My worst fear is Martin will write the same shit in the books. I bet for that in the main lines, I think that only the details will be different.
