General Earwa / Re: The Prince of Nothing: TV series

Showtime has a terrible tendency of dragging it's shows on forever, and constantly interfering creatively. Homeland, Dexter and Weeds are good examples of that.
I'd be surprised if it were Starz, they tend to do things rather cheaply, don't think they have the budget.

HBO, could be. They definitely have the cash, and with Game of Thrones ending soon they may want another gritty Fantasy series to replace it.

It's also possible it could be one of the other, newer network and streaming companies making a big play, tapping that same dark fantasy vein. Netflix for example, or Hulu.

Holy shit. I honestly never thought this would happen. I mean, I really like these books, but I'm far from convinced they could ever have mainstream success. Prince of Nothing just doesn't have the soapy elements required, unless they drastically re-write this stuff. And then there's a bunch of other challenges, like how to convincingly portray the fact of Kellhus constant manipulations. Or how mainstream audiences would react to say, the Epilogue in Warrior Prophet...Well, exciting stuff regardless, though I have a feeling nothing will come of it.

While I did notice the similarity with Onkis, it seems a strange choice if that's what it is. Onkis hasn't exactly been much of a focus. Outside of that scene in TDTCB, I think the name is only mentioned in passing

Favourite

Conphas - His utter narcissism made him a lot of fun.
Kelmomas - I really enjoy this sick little bastard. The connection with Ajokli provides an interesting new wrinkle as well
Kellhus - Don't think this really needs explaining.
Mimara - I really enjoy her detached perspective on things, as well as the way she's develloped these past few books.

Least Favourite

Serwe - An exceedingly repetitive and uninteresting character. Shouldn't have been a POV at all I don't think.
Sorweel - There are times when I really enjoy his perspective, others where he can descend into irritating self-pity. I thought he was coming around to being a good character in White Luck Warrior, but then we have that last chapter...Ishterebinth seems to have him back on track at least

Maybe something about the Dunyain mission being bullshit, similar to what Koringhus finally figured out?

I also really liked it, reminded me of something from Malazan in it's inspired craziness. Would definitely like to see it's effects on other people, or how people perceive it. Is Sorweel now damned for having put it on etc.

Is Sorweel still going to be half-ghoul though? I thought the implication in that last chapter was that Oirunas had ripped it off of him, and therefore severed the connection between the two souls.

A fairly minor thing that I noted in another thread, but Zsoronga doesn't get so much as a mention in this book. Now that the Malo-Chiphrang is on the loose trying to kill his entire line he might come back into focus, though a mention would have been nice.

Well, arguably, WLW was beaten by Ajokli. Psatma and the Fanim are a sacrifice move so that Kellhus thinks he's beaten Yatwer.

The problem for Yatwer is that after Sorweel's time in the Weeping Mountain, he might not be such a willing tool, and may in fact not act as Yatwer wishes.
But doesn't Kellhus know, or at least suspect that Sorweel is an agent? I thought that was part of why he was sent away, or at least that's what I thought.

I just think Sorweel has to still be an agent of Yatwer's, she's been a major player for the 3 books now, it would be a bit anti-climactic for Yatwer to have been beaten so casually. Ajokli doesn't even seem to care all that much, just doing it for the lols. Psatma was no real challenge to defeat.

- the rape of Proyas. It was written so ambiguously - like Bakker was trying to trick us - that I wasn't even sure it physically happened until he told Saubon. And the fact that Kellhus did it not out of a sexual need but as a way to challenge Saubon - not Proyas - makes it even more twisted somehow.
Got some major Inchoroi vibes from this, too. They seem to enjoy sodomizing people.

They enjoy horrifying people I think, the specific manner of act is just secondary to that (though a sexual component is always present too).  In the case of someone who craved sodomy they would probably find another perversion instead.
So is the whole "We're a race of lovers" thing just a joke on their parts?

It's a shame, the part of the cover art that isn't that generic face is pretty good. If they had just some sort of medieval tableaux in it's place, or some other illustration, it would be fine. Probably wouldn't cost much more either.

The Nonman Embassy implies that when visiting the Outside substitutions can happen. But I'm not totally convinced that anyone has tried what Kellhus is doing with Ciphrang-Malowebi. And, not that I'm convinced myself, many readers have suggested that the heart is the seat of the soul in Earwa, rather than the brain.
Hmm, makes sense I suppose. Though it seems a bit odd to me that there would even be a seat of the soul. Wouldn't Mimara notice or menion something along those lines when looking with the Judging Eye?

He didn't die in WLW and no mention of him in TGO. Sarl & Captain-Beard, neither (Gollum analogue, I'm sure). Zsoronga does belong to the "line of Nganka'kull" (sp?), which Ciprang-Malowebi is ostensibly supposed to  "end" and he has Sorweel's secret Chorae pouch... so I assume Sorweel will rejoin the Ordeal and probably be as horrified as the Nonmen at the state of the Ordeal and his friend, Zsoronga.

While a major portion of the Ordeal seem to succumb to the Meat, less than half the Ordeal seem to be Scalded - I can never remember the odd notations but there should at least be some citations in TGO or at the end of WLW regarding how many Ordealmen reconvene after Ursulor. With Kellhus' admonition to flee, he seems to sacrifice only the forty-eight Knights of the Desert Lion, a good number of Swayal likely, and then only those Ordealmen and Schoolmen closest to Sibuwal Vaka's lead - he and his Sons of Cepalor are the nearest of the Ordeal when Dagliash blows.
That would be a fairly effective reveal if that's the direction Bakker goes. Reminds me of Reek from ASOIAF. Does seem odd that there wasn't a mention though, just to remind us of his existence. I wonder if the Ciphrang hybrid could have the power to get to Zsoronga, it's quite the distance.

I'm not exactly sure, but the figure of 150,000 seems stuck in my mind for the Ordeal at Ursulor. And 20,000 having been scalded? Wish I had my copy at hand.

Thank you. Took forever for my book order to arrive, thought I'd never get to discuss it.

True, it just seemed especially dramatic this time around. It's probably a function of being closer to the endgame, more dramatic revelations to uh, reveal. And hey, it works/

The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO SPOILERS] Meppa is...

My first thought was that Kellhus may want to study the Psukhe for some reason, but then it seems fairly self-explanatory, driven by passion and so on...It does seem odd to keep him alive.

Maybe he knew it was Moe (gray hair hmmmmmm). He came back to Kyudea after defeating the Cish at Shimeh, Whelmed Moe and sent him to the desert. Yessssss, the Moe=Meppa will be revealed in TUC. @Wilshire, the Moe theories will NEVER die!!!!
Moe's totally dead bro, deader than Cnauir was until this book.

I can't imagine the Kellman not even saying a word to his pops while he was giving him the metagnostic beatdown.

I admit Bakker really got me for a second with the mention of Sorweel being torn in two, but I managed to gather the true meaning quickly enough.

I imagine there is some metaphorical meaning there too. I know it's meant that the Aimolos was ripped from his face. Yet, I wonder if that also severed his link to Yatwer, also? So excited where this storyline goes from where it was left off.
I mean, it's possible. But in narrative terms it would be a bit of a bummer. Now that the WLW and Psatma went out like complete chumps, Sorweel is Yatwer's only remaining tool. Given how much build up Yatwer has been given it seems unlikely to me that she'd be so quickly beaten.

The chapter where Sorweel descends into the Holy Deep is pretty unassailable. I admit Bakker really got me for a second with the mention of Sorweel being torn in two, but I managed to gather the true meaning quickly enough.

I'd say the final chapter from Koringhus got me the most. Most of the time, character arcs in this series seem to be a downward trend, here this was almost redemptive and moving, even if it did end with him killing himself. Maybe I completely missed the real implications, but it seems to me the Survivor really did love that child, or at least as much as a Dunyain could.
