Title: TSA related art and stuff. (IV)
Post by: Cüréthañ on August 01, 2014, 12:04:59 am
Lovely work once again, Somna.  You spoil us terribly.

I suspect Angrashael might have looked into the inverse flame and the story is derived from that.

Cheers, man.  (sigh)  You're probably right about the IF.  Fuckin' Bakker... is nothing simple and straight-forward in your world?  Is a spoon not just a spoon?  No, it's some devious Inchoroi obscenity we call a spoon.  I drool over the complexity, and yet find myself yearning for simplicity.  :-\

But seriously art should show things as described, I think. Just can't stop speculating. ;)

I came across that Angeshrael piece when I happened to look him up on the PoN wiki. Awesome stuff dude! While Cure's idea of the "fire" in question being the IF has crossed my mind, I've always been more attracted to the idea that it was simply a "scrying fire", much like the one Kellhus shows to Proyas. Assuming that this story is NOT literal (and to an extent, I think most of the older tales of the Gods are indeed mostly true), then it would imply that an Inchoroi somehow posed as Husyelt (not all that unbelievable) and that the IF is something, well...mobile, for lack of a better word. An object that one can carry it around with them. For whatever reason, I do not have the impression that the IF is like that...it seems more like something that's stuck in the heart of the Ark, and thus one must travel to it. But if it is mobile, then it could have been a goad to make the Tribes of Men invade Earwa, except then we already know for a fact that they did this pretty satisfactorily with the Tusk itself.

It's an interesting question. The very early periods of Earwa are one of the most intriguing things in the series for me (mainly the origins of the Nonmen and their relation to humans, and where the Gods fit into all of this -- I don't think the Inchoroi were relevant to the origins of the peoples of Earwa). We already know the Inchoroi were tooling around and manipulating humans in Eanna, but then we also know that all these seemingly mythical stories about Gods and their abilities ended up being pretty literal. Just look at what Yatwer can do. As with many -- practically all -- mysteries in the series, it could really go at least two ways, if not more.

Very nice. Love the idea of it looking like a living being.

Your art constantly makes me feel sad about how poor my imagination is, but of course you should make more, you are the (unofficially) official TSA artist after all. People are counting on you. ;)

As usual Somnambulist, great stuff.

For some reason I am partial to the Squid rendering.  It would fit nicely with the Inchies having gills and the possibility that the Arc itself gave birth to the Inchoroi.

Keep it up!

Edit: Your "WTF" looks like a cobra.

I like that Som,

Can you switch it to a purply red?

The whale with tails would look like a giant penis then in keeping with the Inchoroi theme of phallus worship.

Yeah, blue is just the color I sketch in, but I get the joke.  I guess there's no escaping the giant flying penis analogies.  Maybe more like a monstrous sperm fertilizing a world-egg.

Awesome stuff Somm. I personally would  go with a mix between the cruiser and the squid. It should definitely look somewhat like a living thing, but I do like the front area of the cruiser a lot.

It would fit nicely with the Inchies having gills and the possibility that the Arc itself gave birth to the Inchoroi.

Wait, the Inchoroi had gills? I've never heard/noticed this before. Not trying to discredit you or anything, I'm just really curious because I've never heard this before. Do you happen to remember where and what book this is mentioned?

Don't remember that either, but their description does remind me of fish a bit - what with the transuclent grey skin and all.

I kind of imagined the ark as having a larger, perhaps more bulbous main section.  Space faring vessels do not require aerodynamics in my mind. :D
That said, all of those concept sketches are awesome.

Thanks guys.  The gill comment was from The False Sun, I believe.  The inchie's description mentioned "the fluting of gill tissue" on its neck.

FB, which one is the cruiser?  The Cricket?  I'll work up some more sketches based on all your comments.  Except for the purple penis maybe.   ;)

Ah yeah, the Cricket is what I meant, just misread the title there. Either way that one looks a bit more "space-shipey" to me, which I think is good (but again, an organic element definitely feel like a necessary presence in some fashion, and given what we know of the ship, a squid -- or other aquatic creature -- makes too much sense not to include).
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. (IV)
Post by: Wilshire on August 18, 2014, 06:08:06 pm
They had gills, I think its mentioned more than once, TFS and TTT glossary maybe.

The first one makes me think of Zerg, but any giant space faring living thing does.

I like 2 the best, 3 the least. Less streamlined is a fair point. It is in space, after all. However, it did end up almost entirely buried so maybe it was pointy.

Thanks for the sperm - egg analogy. Very fitting.

Great stuff as always Som.

It was a many-chambered mountain, wrought in a gold-gleaming metal that could not be scored, let alone broken. A city rolled into the warped planes of some misbegotten fish. A ruin that the world could not stomach, that the ages could not digest.

More fish analogies.

"There are some," Achamian whispered, "who argue that the entire Ark is a thing of bone, that vein and skin once pulsed across these walls."
"You mean the Ark once lived?"
Achamian nodded, even as he swallowed for dread. "The Inchoroi called themselves Children of the Ark. The most ancient Nonmen lays refer to them as the Orphans."
"So this thing... this place... mothered them?"
Seswatha smiled. "Or fathered... The fact is, we haven't the words for such things. Even if we could pierce the shroud of millennia, I fear this place would remain beyond our understanding."
"But I understand full well," the young Prince said. "You're saying that Golgotterath is a dead womb."

Perhaps zombie green/blue/grey flesh-tones with golden spines?

Been a bit busy with life, but this is one I've wanted to do for a while.  A total flight of fantasy, but why the hell not?

The enigmatic Witch-King, Su'juroit.

As usual Som you have a flare for capturing the tone of the Gnostic sorcery.

Really like this - one of my favourite of yours yet.

Nice. This, the Fallen, and the False Sun are my favorites of yours yet.

One question though, was that an actual sword or a magical lightsaber?

Christ, stop spoiling us Som  :P

Is that just supposed to be some war-paint aesthetic on his cheeks?

Also, if this is another rendering of the copper tree of Siol, I prefer this one much more than the one on the shield of Cujara Cinmoi.  The roots on this one make it look that much more gnarled.  Something more horrifying than regal.  Fitting for a Witch-King.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. (IV)
Post by: Triskele on August 27, 2014, 08:45:43 pm
I was also going to ask if that was the Copper Tree of Siol.

Either way, another great entry.  I do wonder if we'll ever learn more about this obscure character or if it was just a way to let the reader know that Kellhus had asked an intelligent question about whether a 2nd inutteral was possible and had ever been attempted.  A Su-juroit Atrocity Tale would be fun.

This is awesome...
but, as a continuity buff, I must protest because his eyes and mouth aren't glowing.  He's clearly wielding sorcery.

Sorry.  I feel bad because I'm criticizing such a sublime piece.  :,(

eta; In the interests of disseminating Bakker and perhaps getting more exposure for yourself, have you considered sharing on r/fantasy?  They seem to love illustrations there.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. (IV)
Post by: Wilshire on August 28, 2014, 01:29:50 pm
Haha Curethan, complaining about the eyes/mouth, but you're right.

Either way, looks great. Something about the face looks a bit too angular to be human (nice job).

Love the concentric circles around the hands/fingertips/head. I'm a sucker for complex geometries, and you renderings of the Gnosis make my brain happy.
Great job on the robes as well.

The whole thing exudes power.

As a potential defence of non-glowing eyes:
The eyes/mouth/forehead only glow when casting the sorcery. Holding the meaning in one's soul once it has been cast does not perpetually keep the eyes lit. Example: Surrilic point, Mim holds without glowy eyes. The circles may be some kind of ward or other spell that has lasting effects (thinking of Inrau's speed buffs), and this depicts  Su'juroit after the casting.

Somnambulist,

Love it.  Really like the face and the accompanying youthful look, makes him seem more dangerous for some reason.

We need to start a disseminating Somnambulist thread and make it official!  (This thread is pretty much already doing so...)

Post by: Somnambulist on August 28, 2014, 02:18:43 pm
Thanks for all the great feedback, everyone.  Cheers, SilentRoamer and Garet Jax.  In answer to various questions:

Ashtinahgma:  Real sword, enhanced with sorcery, like the Nonman in TDTCB prologue whose sword seemed to reflect the light of another sun kinda thing.

Hirtius/Pansa:  Yes, just ritual-esque paint on the face.  I don't know if I meant it to be THE Copper Tree, but I see the correlation now.  I more had in mind the connection that witches seem to have to nature in Earwa.  The golden color was just an attempt to make it stand out against the background colors.  So, unintentionally intentional.

Triskele:  I agree.  I don't think Su'juroit will feature again, but a showdown between Kellhus and the Witch-King would be awesome.

Curethan:  You wouldn't believe how many times I went back and forth with the eye-glow/no-eye-glow thing.  Wilshire's defense on my part is accurate, and his example was exactly the one I was going to give.  The portrait is in that moment after the sorcery has been called.  That's where I ended up going because I wanted to show the face and eyes.

Wilshire:  Back to the face comment, thanks!  That's what I was trying to go for.  The inhumanness of Nonmen features, which is why I decided against the eye-glow.  Tried to show the 'beauty' of their faces, the differences between Man and Nonman.  Also, for this one specifically, I wanted to make the face androgynous.  Su'juroit's title is the Witch-King (female-male monikers), so he/she could have been either in my mind.

Anyway, thanks for listening!  Cheers.

Screenshot of eye-glow version below.

The eye glowing is a one of the great mechanics of Earwan sorcery, and I love seeing it added.

I thought the face looked strangely feminine, but still alien. You did a good job with it. And, you were right, the eye glow detracts from the facial structure. I think if the intent was to make the face a focus point, you made the right call leaving it out.

We need to start a disseminating Somnambulist thread and make it official!  (This thread is pretty much already doing so...)
Well we do have the curated art thread that pulls it all together. I wouldn't want to make too many stickies.
Maybe make Earwa Art its own subthread in General Earwa? Then we could have curated works for each artist, which madness/me would maintain, but then have individual topics per work (One sticky for, say, Somna, one for Q, one for Others)? That way the art would be easy to find via search or scrolling through (title of the topic would be title of the piece), the curated topics make it easy to find by author, and discussion are easy(er) to track...

Thoughts? May or may not be better than just having (I), (II,) (III), etc. topics.

As for actually dissemination... Not really sure. Maybe Penguin is interested in an "(un)official TSA artwork companion".?

Curethan:  Sorry, missed the comment about r/fantasy before.  I'm not terribly familiar with reddit, so I didn't consider/know about that one.  Thanks for mentioning it, I'll probably look into it.  I uploaded to r/bakker for a while, but the last few times I tried, I kept getting errors, so I kind of gave up.  It was probably me just being a spaz, but I should try again, I suppose.

As for further dissemination, I dusted off my old twitter account and started posting there lately, as well, but my whopping 11 followers is kinda anemic.   :D  Of course, the deviantart account gets a lot of traffic, and I've joined groups there to get the images in front of more eyes.  Facebook seems like a logical step, but I still rebel against that one for illogical reasons.  Anyway, thanks again, guys!

Reminds me a bit too strongly of the Swayali, though the details on this one are great. The magic definitely echos of water, and the glow snake eyes are a nice touch. Great job, yet again.

Why don't you produce something mediocre so I can stop praising you? :P

btw I'd love 1 more god, idc which. I've got the 7 that you have done so far made into a wallpaper and could really use one more to even it out to 4 per screen. A selfish request though. Do what inspires you as it will be a superior work.

Another great one.

But it raises a question for me that may be meaningless in the grand scheme of things.  Somn, your other random Cishaurim was also shaved-headed.  We don't actually get a detail that the Cishaurim all shave their heads do we?  I know that Moenghus does.  It's mentioned several times during the long final sequence with Kellhus.  But I just wondered what made you go with that look for the other Cish too.

Huh, I had to dig for it.  TTT, Chapter 16, Shimeh, the waterbearer in the tunnels is described as having a shaved pate.  Then later, Yalgrota had grabbed Fanfarokar (a Cishaurim primary) and "hammered the shaven skull into sopping ruin."  There might be more, but it's late and that's probably sufficient.   :)

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Yeah, Meppa...  when first reading he had long white hair, I was like 'Whaaaaaaaaaat....?  He's not Cishaurim!'  I guess it's not a sin to grow your hair out when there are no other Cish left to call you a hippie.  lol

Maybe we should change the title of this topic to "unofficial official TSA artwork" and make another one of just "tsa related", like this below. MG mentioned it looked like Quya magic. Maybe an Inchoroi singing...

Fox Lu - Artist
"DoomMaster-Satrath (http://dxthpu4318olx.cloudfront.net/assets/images/images/000/160/085/large/90c74b232272bc40cd3ca94e854c8cb33db51dee.jpg?1408031098)"

Inchoroi Space tentacles in the back sky, giant bashrag wrecking ships in the sea in the back, Wracu clouding the skies, and an Inchoroi Singing? Or a Quya.

Loving it Quinthane!!!

can i make requests to the artists of tsa?  i have no idea how hard or feasible any of this would be, but they looks neat in my mind-eye:

- sarcellus' closed face with the silvery lines from the burn

MAGIC HANDS!

Quinthane, is the Kyudean mansion part your overall favorite?  It is awesome--I suspect we'll be rereading it a lot after TUC comes out.  So much of the nonman history is suggestive but not revelatory...

Quinthane, you are rockin!  It's awesome that you do so much on the Kyudean mansion.  I didn't think of it as a Moria thing, but now I want to go reread it.  I think Moria might be the Great Meat Hook that Tolkien seizes his audience with.  The flight from the Nazgul is good, but Moria o Moria!

How can i compliment your latest explosion?  i cannot!  but i will say

Sarcellus - i'm really getting the 'clenched' intensity vibe from his face
Inrau - so torn and chosen!
The Shadow Way - love the way they move through the 'blood of night'!
For 1000 Years - those dark eye cavities are drawing me and the whole picture in
Swayali - so bright, so damned!

So, as some of you may know, I started doing daily sketches, not necessarily anything to do with TSA, just trying to improve my art.  This allows me a lot of freedom to do whatever comes to mind, trying out different styles, etc.  Subsequently, I received a comment on my deviantArt page asking what "all these images are from, and it looks like I moved on from PON art" (to paraphrase). After explaining the sketch thing, I answered that I have certainly not moved on from TSA art, quite the opposite.  As one of you knows, I've been working on a lot of illustrations for a TSA project, but won't be posting those until such time as this 'other thing' is completed and drops.  No real news on when that might actually be, but hopefully before The Unholy Consult hits the shelves.  Anyway, I think this thing could be really cool, so here's hoping it'll help spur sales of Scott's books (when it's done).

In the meantime, it's been a while since I did something that I could share here, so I did this one tonight.  Shauriatas:

Thanks to everyone for being cool and supportive.  Much appreciation.

So good. This, with the False Sun and the Fallen are probably my favorites of yours. But then, it seems like I have a new favorite every time I see a new sketch.

Also, that Shaeönanra is creepy as fuck.

Damn, Iyokus is boss as shit. Love the floaty things. Ironically I was just reading the Saretoic Library sequence. I actually have come to kind of like Iyokus. I mean he's not the nicest guy in the world but he's very pragmatic (which means he'll probably end up joining the Consult).

Or Cu'Jara Cinmoi or Ciogli or Ingalira or Nin'Sariccas, who knows they all look the same them Nonmen.

As well as a generalized sketch of a cunuroi.

Yep.  And I do as well I am glad to see the series finally gaining more artistic traction.
Maybe an HBO series or feature length film isn't too far off {perhaps a decade or so}, I think there being art around would facilitate the desire for a producer to pick it up as a project...

Here is an older pic I did of Cnaiur although now that I think of it do the Scylvendi have beards and such?
It seems like they would since their ancestral enemy, the Nansur, do not.
I'm pretty sure the Scythians and Sarmatians kept beards, but for some reason I never pictured Cnaiur with a beard.
Title: Re: TSA related art and stuff. (IV)
Post by: Somnambulist on January 22, 2015, 06:16:53 am
No, I don't believe Scylvendi have beards.  Cnaiur, relating the story of Moenghus to Kellhus, states that before Moe left the Utemot, he dyed his hair and shaved his face.

That is a great depiction of Akka. This is pretty close to what I imagine he looked like somewhere midway through Judging Eye. Old, and generally melancholy.

Great stuff as always Somm. I like the newest No-God piece a lot, especially the glowing golden parts. Even though it's never described in the text whatsoever, for some reason I've always imagined the Carapace glowed in some fashion, and the light would pulse in sequence with it speaking.

hate is fickle prex and corny rubber tubing.
prex is missionary style sex with wabidash.

wabidash is a word for when your friends
can’t tell whether or not they want to save your life.

fear is frigid feeling rapping on the shield of sil.
we cannot go where they cannot break us. nah.

free love is dying for we are a spear that is a bird.
and i cannot give you what i do not have. so take up your torch, holy one.

but really i see the figures gathering in the road.
one thousand years of lampstands burning wicks.

dogs that eat circuses for tricks.
clock nithtock and clock nithtick.

that’s scary right, the overthrow….
well, go into the whole and entire to die.

it cannot matter if you never forget it. yes?
she is more holy than all your gods combined, christian.

so sam some fix and guard your nix with plenty of planes.
no one knows. they wail and scream. go home again, little kite freakradio.

for we are not samson. yet.
i cannot write in english if I am to live nor survive. do it right.

Good stuff all around. Bloodmane looks GREAT. I like the Sranc as well -- it's not far off from I imagine them at all. Only major difference for me is the hind legs (I imagined them being more human), though for a creature that can supposedly outrun a horse, I think your version makes a bit more anatomical sense.

I really like everyone's Sranc, the only complaint I have (using the term lightly) is they do not seem inhumanly beautiful enough for me. I think they should be prettier.

I love the body Som, that's pretty much how I envision them. The faces are tough thought because they have to be sort of "Nonman" based because of their origins.

Anyway great work guys.

lol, Quinthane.  Family vacations... each one it's own special little slog.

SR: I agree with you.  Inhumanly beautiful is (not surprisingly) difficult to achieve.  I had a couple of face-front sketches going but I didn't include them for that very reason.  They just looked silly or too feminine.  Still working on it!

I'd argue that silly and feminine isn't actually bad in this case. I think the Sranc are deliberately supposed to provoke a huge cognitive dissonance in observers. They're a perverse Inchoroi joke, after all. Not just a bioweapon.
