The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO SPOILERS] Prologue + Chapter 1 excerpt
« on: June 11, 2016, 09:53:30 pm »
Just read these two chapters, some really great material here. My hear breaks for Proyas, though it's good to be reminded he's a consummate fanatic at the same time.

I actually really enjoy Proyas' journey over books. I feel like it's underrated.
Agreed completely. I'd say it goes under the radar because it's more understated, but he's gone through real changes despite still being a believer to the core. Though I suppose anything seems understated compared to the bugfuck insanity of Cnaiur's arc.
As to the point about the alien worldview I wholeheartedly agree! It's rare that an author can convincingly portray a medieval fanatic mindset I think.

Darzin,
I'm not so sure about Serwe's characterization, it seems to me a big part of it is that her arc is so repetitive and ultimately just ends without any real change to her. Maybe re-reading the Warrior Prophet will change my mind.

General Earwa / Re: Nail of Heaven & the Golden Ark
« on: June 10, 2016, 10:29:42 pm »
I love the sci-fi influences in the series.  As someone who didn't like fantasy growing up, it was an pleasant surprise to see it sneaking in.

It's worth noting that the Nail is a polestar (or pole-wormhole, or whatever), specifically the northern polestar.  Assuming its appearance is related to the Ark's arrival, it makes me wonder just how far north the old north actually is.

Well, in Wert's blog, History of Earwa, the new info revealed was that the Nonman observed the NoH flare up for awhile then go back to normal. Then, 3 years later the Inchoroi arrived via the Ark. So, it wasn't created by the arrival of the Inchoroi. Though, what it actually is, and why it flared and so forth, I have no idea.
Is it possible that it would take 3 years for the Inchoroi ship to travel from the Star/portal to Earwa?

I keep coming back to the bizarre passage with the head on the pole, curious stuff. Given that I'm reading TDTCB again at the moment, it immediately reminded me of the chapter where Inrau goes to the temple of Onkis, whose effigy is first described as being the head of a woman on a pole. This pole is ultimately revealed to be the likeness of a tree, but it's a striking image nonetheless.

Onkis is described as the singer in the dark, who "stood at the heart of all men, moving them to grasp far more than they could hold", which to me seems sort of like what Kellhus is doing with Proyas here, pushing him beyond his limits.

Introduce Yourself / Re: Greetings All

Thank you for the warm welcome Wilshire.

Ha alright, no guilt from me then! Jesus, over 100 dollars already? I suppose that's impressive in it's own way, a testament to the dedication of some fans.

Alright, sounds good. It's nice to hear you folks don't mind things being drudged up or discussed anew, I've found some forums inhospitable on that front. The aforementioned Westeros.org has a tendency to pounce on newcomers and crucify em' for not being up to date on their theories. I'm sure I'll pop into a few random threads in the next few days asking noob questions.

Does the big man Bakker himself post here by the way?

Malazan is near and dear to my heart, even if there's big chunks where I'm sure I have no idea what happened. The Cripples God is a solid conclusion, a miracle given what a glorious clusterfuck the series is!

Prediction: A Non-Woman who somehow survived the womb plague will be discovered.

36
Question: Who destroyed Ishual?

An obvious but pressing one.

37
Question: Is eating Sranc a sin to the God?

38
Question: What is currently happening over in Eanna?

I doubt this'll be in, but that blank space on the map drives me crazy damnit.

39
Prediction: Kelmomas will take charge of the Empire, pushing the Fanim back.

40
Prediction: Cnaiur is still dead, and always will be dead. C'mon people.

41
Prediction: Mimara will learn how to release people from damnation as well as identify it.

42
Prediction: Yatwer will manipulate Sorweel into killing Moenghus and Serwa.

43
Question: Can the White-Luck Warrior be stopped?

44
I'd say my most pressing question is: Does Kellhus truly want the Great Ordeal to succeed?

Though I suppose that would most likely be answered in the Unholy Consult.

Yes, I'm part of the unwashed Srancesque horde come due to the Advanced Reader Copy. But I do hope to engage in proper discussion eventually, though given the depth and breadth of what I've seen round here I think it'll take time before I can join in!

In truth, I'd feel rather guilty winning this competition, given that I'm only partway through my first re-read of the series and there's much more ravenous fans them me around. Ok, not that guilty, still wanna win this thing. Never had an ARC, it's all prestigious and shit. Now to think up questions...

First picked up the Darkness that Comes Before 3 years ago and tore through the series. I think I'd seen it heartily recommended (and hotly debated) over at Westeros.org, which I sometimes lurk around. No doubt there were many, many things I missed entirely on my first read through given all the layers and my lack of philosophical knowledge, but I've enjoyed the series greatly. Oddly enough I didn't realize this place existed, never did the research I suppose. I'll be getting reading through these threads soon, though recommendations on where to start would be nice!
