Literature / Re: Steven Erikson (The 3.5 million word journey?)

I salute you for doing it MSJ, I was wondering if you would make it when I saw on Westeros you were going straight through.
I'm taking my time, just finished House of Chains myself and really enjoyed it. Waiting a bit in between books makes it special each time I come back to the series. You guys are right, though, the urge to dive into the next one is pretty tough at the end of each installment.

Sure, i can definitely set aside some time Saturday.

How about we break down the Knife of Many Hands? That way we talk about something topical and there's a lot there we could branch off to. We can probably work something out for anyone who hasn't read it.

Glad you guys finally posted another one, enjoyed it as always!

I can try to get on one too, just give me a heads up when the next one is. The fiance is away so I got plenty of time this weekend if anyone feels up to it or just skyping in general.

Sorry, tried to make it clear with the first line! Thanks for the title edit, Madness.

Light, Time, and Gravity / Sociopathy in Light, Time, & Gravity [SPOILERS]?
« on: February 20, 2015, 03:36:18 am »
[EDIT Madness: Title changed]

Obviously, major spoilers.

The twist ending of Light, Time, and Gravity completely changes the reader's perception of everything Dylan had to say up to that point. One thread that I became skeptical about is his depiction of Cutter. Almost from the beginning, Dylan explicitly paints him as a sociopath and I initially expected this to manifest in some dramatic, violent way, after the intro vaguely references that he is connected with a crime. Time and again, the narrator returns to this characterization, both when Cutter is in a scene (by highlighting his behavior) and even when he is off-screen (via analogies, such as the Canadian elections passage). It occurred to me that this might just have been Dylan's way of rationalizing the fact that he ultimately murdered Cutter on a whim.

While he's no doubt a scumbag, it's hard to say whether Cutter actually ever crosses the line of typical alpha-male nonsense and steps into sociopath territory. He didn't react at all in the way Dylan was certain he would when Dylan beat him at arm-wrestling. His eventual decision to tell Jerry about the affair is something I think a lot of us would do in his position, and he indeed says he told Jerry because of their friendship. He tells this to Dylan like it was something that should be obvious but Dylan immediately disbelieves him, attributing it instead to Cutter's need to create drama.

Does Dylan's constant cynicism regarding human connections suggest that Dylan is actually the sociopath? This kinda ties into the BBT-esque cognitive science rants, where the protagonist aggressively challenges belief in meaning, despite desperately longing for it in other passages. I wonder if this book was in part Bakker poking fun at and taking himself less seriously, as he often emphasizes on his blog that he knows he is not above his observations on human shortcomings. In Light, Time, and Gravity, we have a protagonist who embodies just how true that is.

General Earwa / Re: Bakker and Feminism
« on: February 18, 2015, 01:46:10 pm »
It does kind of seem like Bakker cherry-picked the most misogynistic elements of different time periods to make the situation as hopeless as possible. But it all goes back to him challenging the interest of fantasy readers in going on an adventure in a romanticized pre-scientific world (as he calls it). So while there may be self-serving inaccuracies, I still respect him for actually having something to say and making an argument for his readers to ponder.

Also, I don't think there are that many brutal scenes. Iirc,  he doesn't actually go into the details of the first Cnaiur-Serwe incident. The one that really disturbed me was the Warrior Prophet epilogue and I'm still debating whether or not he crossed the line in shock value with that one.

I know he's had the story in his head for 20 years or however long but sometimes I wonder if he invented Mimara in response to some of the criticism online.

Do we know why Esmi's contraceptive didn't work for the Mimara conception? It seems like she might know the father, considering how careful she otherwise is, at least whenever she reflects on it in other chapters, namely when she takes it off for Kellhus. This would be an insane revelation.

Happy 2015 TSA!

It would be incredible if Kellhus' abilities have come so far that he could faifthfully rebuild those lost classic texts by virtue of pure deduction and the time he's spent in the Three Seas.

Yeah I noticed that in the TTT glossary too although I could see it being an inconsistency on Bakker's part.

Not that I don't like the theory though!

It might have been General Sag-Marmau, who led the Second Investiture, hanging from the rope. That one was probably more heartbreaking since it ended with the awakening of the no-god whereas the first dispersed due to fragmentation and surprise Sranc assaults.

I think Mekeritrig asking Nautzera for the location of the Heron Spear precedes Kellhus formally asking Akka for the Gnosis.

I do think they have different dreams, Akka at least, since he started having the mundane dreams no one else had before. I wonder if that was Kellhus' early experiments with dream conditioning,  starting out small before going for the big ones. You have to keep in mind that from the very beginning, Kellhus knew he could manipulate Akka based on his dreams (he tells them a dream lead him to the Holy War).

if it really Kellhus,  you have to wonder if he's grasped Seswatha's heart, or if he's learned about all these dreams from Mandati/Swayali. Or is he fabricating the ones that other Mandate school men haven't seen before?

I've been thinking about this question alot since that post went up on Westeros because it's such an interesting issue.  It's highly appealing and satisfying to have the enemies in a fantasy series have an understandable justification, saving their own souls. The False Sun threw a wrench in that, though, with Bakker planting the insidious seed of doubt that the Inverse Fire might not be the objective, irrefutable proof of damnation we all assumed it to be. I also read recently Aurang boasting how he comes from a more violent race than Earwa's men.

Even still, I think an argument can be made diminishing the immorality of the Inchoroi. With Bakker's world view and teleology, an advanced race like the Inchoroi would have as much concern for other people's suffering as someone playing Grand Theft Auto would for its in-game pedestrians.

Using them as a buffer so they could keep doing whatever it is they've been doing for the last 2,000 years. It's probably just best to let them reproduce out of control rather than whittle them down through minor expeditions. It seems like the Inchoroi havr always drawn out their enemies to them before springing the howling multitudes of Sranc upon them.

I liked the first of the no god ones better for some reason, even though the second captures more of what's going on with the stars.

Amazing stuff all around!
