All,
With the advent of TGO neigh, we wanted to spruce up the forum a bit. Since are currently working on transferring to a more stable host (which should fix the posting and PM issues), we wanted to change things up.
We will be sticking with a Simple Machine Forum (SMF), so as to avoid interruptions, but there is a lot that can be done to re-skin this place and make it not look like it was built in the 90's.
Any and all are welcome to provide feedback, though I can't guarantee any one person will be satisfied with every change.
Some notes:
No dark background with light text.
We are considering buying/designing a custom theme.
This site has some examples of whats possible: http://smftricks.com/index.php?action=portfolio;sa=premium;start=0
Alternatively you could go here and select from the dropdown menu up at the top banner one of their themes. This lets you look at a demo site, very cool: http://demo.smftricks.com/index.php?theme=1
Wish list of features anyone? We will do our best to keep an quorum/IM equivalent.
-
I feel we should salvage what we can and make the new one look like the old Three-Seas board. I really liked that look, but I might be in the minority.
-
^ I like that look too. I would also be partial to something like a light brown, yellowish background like you see on old paper or scrolls in a fantasy kind of way if that makes sense.
It would also be great to have a big colorful banner along the top. Maybe Jason's scene of Kellhus leaving Ishual with "THE SECOND APOCALYPSE" across it?

In case anyone doesn't remember what it looked like when it was really working, you can see it here: Old Three-Seas Board (http://web.archive.org/web/20050206005215/http://www.forum.three-seas.com/).
-
That's a fair suggestion. I really like the intigration of the Rankine covers into most aspects of the old forum.
Any thoughts on some of the themes with a bit more... features? I can't decide if the extra stuff going on, with banners or collapsible menus is just irritating or if it provides some more value. Also, I like the idea of a scroll-able banner, but having it auto-scroll like in most of the themes is nauseating.
I like the thought of having a faded background, similar to what one of the Bakker wikis used to look like using one of the Rankine covers. Something that the forum proper sits on top of.
I was thinking the circumfix as the symbol to the left of all the boards. Its potentially more identifiable than the Tusk with so few pixels, but I also like that idea.
I'd also like to have better links on the top to the various media platforms that 'bakkerfans' has encompassed, and having them exist as symbols (the twitter bird, the facebook f, etc) seems like a simple way to do it without cluttering things.
-
I don't see much value in the collapsible headers, since we have so few sub-fora, but some people might find it useful, I guess.
I think a decent outline of the Tusk wouldn't be bad, but it's really a toss up between that and the Circumfix, I think either is fine.
I do prefer a darker color theme, I really liked the old board's black, gray, gold and red theme, but again, that is just personal bias.
-
Would it work to have a Tusk for PoN sub boards and Circumfix for aspect Emperor ones? Maybe that would be a little too much.
I also don't see worthwhile functionality in collapsible headers or auto scrolling banners. Just one big banner at the top of a page to give some visual flair to the forum would be nice. Maybe a different banner depending on the subforum?

I think "the look" of the ZTS reflects the fact that it is phpBB rather than SMF. As far as some phpBB boards go, Three-Seas was fairly simple.

Easy for me to say, but could we forgo SMF and just use phpBB?

Eh, we've not had great luck with transferring forums and formats. We're likely stuck with SMF for the foreseeable future.
-
Also - v1's phpBB error has... made us uneasy about phpBB.
-
Why no light text on dark background? Just curious.
-
I hate it :). Literally that is the only reason and one I will not yield to the collective judgment of the Second Apocalype Hive-Meld.
-
Wow. What a dictator...

Well... sorry, people.
I've tried my best to always yield to the Hive-Meld at all other decision making cruxes. I'm sorry if exercising my absolute control in this one instance is off-putting.
Light on dark hurts me and leaves trace images.
-
Well, I don't really care what colors you pick... I wasn't being serious there anyway.

Haha, it's whatever, it's your forum. It would be neat to have switchable color options, but that is probably a lot of work and maybe not even possible under SMF...
-
H, I believe Wislhire or Madness said that there would be a new "pay" option to add the skin you so desire.
-
No worries. I'm just dramatic :).
We're all good, Aural/H. All in jest.
Though, Wilshire knows more about what's possible than I. Maybe preferential colour schemes is possible.
Lol - No, MSJ. I'll never make members pay for anything. Wilshire is buying us a custom theme from SMFtricks and he wants input on what he should get.
-
H, I believe Wislhire or Madness said that there would be a new "pay" option to add the skin you so desire.
Said no such thing lol. Stop spreading your blasphemous lies.

Sorry. I read it wrong i guess. I took it as there would be an option that we could change the format's skin.

Sorry for poor communication on my part then.
The whole forum is getting a new theme/skin. I don't know if it can be made dynamic once implemented, but I'll see if that's an option and what the added expense might be.
So far it looks like a 'no' for a carosel of moving/move-able pics on the home page.
Custom banner up top
Custom subforum icons
Something more minimalist than with more 'features' that would likely be irrelevant.
Any suggestions for static header and/or footer images?
-
It's possible that we might have a unique banner being taken care of.
-
Not sure if this is the right place, but here goes.
Since the switch, the forum can't be approached anymore through TapaTalk. It says the plugin is currently unavailable. Any chance that will come back?
-
What switch? It's fine on tapatalk for me.

mostly.harmless, Tapatalk updates their code for our SMF version more often than I regularly check. It shouldn't cause immediate problems being one update behind but I've installed the most recent version again (as I've done periodically over the past couple years). I'll make sure to check more diligently.
Wilshire, on topic, I personally don't find any with static bars running across the top or side appealing or those where different categories aren't organized top-down (though, I'll admit that one is probably just my skew having read the same kinds of forums for years now).
EDIT: It also looks like at least one has a function that allows someone to change the colour scheme - I just can't tell if that is the admin or regular users.
EDIT: By "static bars running across the top or side," I'm referring to the login/recent topics that will float at the top or side as you browse. Otherwise, I like the banner space.
-
Yeah I wasn't sure about the multiple category thing. Probably do without.
Pictures per category though? Probably to obtrusive
What about the static 'recent posts' on the side. Good or bad?
Not sure if the color change thing is available for members or if thats something you pick once
-
As per categories, I don't like Neuter and Materialistic.
Pictures per category?
I like Enjoy's layout but that just makes me a minimalist, I think; I don't know about my aesthetic commitments.
I like Dark Dream Yellow but I am extremely hesitant regarding light on dark (perhaps - hopefully - what I like are the fonts and layout).
StickUp or Bright are the better two examples of that sidebar recent posts - don't like those at all for that reason.
I do like the scrolling banners on Darkly.
Ultimately, though, I don't really care what's picked so long as its sourced on the suggestions of the members - if it was unanimous, I'd probably go light on dark.
-
We can do whatever I'm sure. Colorso are the easiest thing to change.... or so I would argue from ignorance.
So don't worry about colors. Look at fonts and layouts. Etc.
Do you like the hidden user information or not? I think I'd want it visible, maybe.
-
I haven't looked but what counts as "hidden" user information?
-
One of them pretty much just shows you're avatar and maybe name, the rest doesn't show up (karma, post count, other text) until you hover cursor over it.
-
Is there a problem with the Quorum or is it just me ?
-
No quorum, to many spoilers, had to burn it down. We will pUT it back after TGO release.
-

Interesting. I don't think I care either way.

Yup.

Yup.
At least it isn't that green.

It's like my senses need to adjust to the new look...
I feel the same, it will probably take a while to get used to it.
-
Its definitely different. We'll be tweeking things.
Also, users can change to their own color, should you not like this red color.
-
I like it 8).
-
I'd probably like it better if the back-background was darker, even keeping the text boxes white.
Right now it seems to be just slightly off-white.
-
There is the dark mode, which I think you might prefer, H, I just don't know that it's part of the individual colour scheme choices.
It's only been like half an hour ;). I want to let Wilshire play with it for a day and see how he settles with it. I yield to his judgment here.
-
Redeagl approves of the new colour.

Seems to only have a "light theme" and then two other ones that are basically the old layout, unfortunately.
-
Yeah, unfortunately, it's looking to be a toggle on the admin side, rather than an option for individual members.
-
Wilshire's looking into how to fix the off-white, among other things.

Yeah well, I suck ;) .
No hope on the slog!
-
I really like Som's art as the background :)
[EDIT Madness: Removed spoiler tag - keep it in the proper subforum please.]
-
It was nice, but needs to be trimmed down a bit to fit better, in my opinion.
-
I'm not really digging the new format. Doesn't seem to be mobile-phone friendly. But I am coping. Just figured out how to modify a post.....I notice that if you tap the edit icon (between the delete and quote icons), you hit a dead-end.
-
My eyessszzzzz! They burnssszzzeesssss!!!!!
Seriously though, it's fine, but Beardfisher is right about the mobile un-friendly-ness. How do I try other themes/colours? Can't seem to find it anywhere in settings.

Hmm, thats disappointing. I noticed it wasn't super mobile friendly - and that was a huge reason of changing.
Is there an easy way to switch it to the desktop site?
Also, keep complaining/reporting issues, either here or in the error thread. Its important for us to know. Thanks guys.

To each their own, as per usual. I've heard a couple people prefer this theme's mobile browsing. H provided one option but I'm checking into making sure our Tapatalk still works, which is the best way to access the forum on mobile.
That's weird about the "Modify" button, BFK, I did not have that problem when I tried on my phone this morning.

On the tapatalk topic... I used to use it but the ads were painful, and it was buggy as hell. Much preferred the "full" forum view on mobile. This new style uses an enormous amount of real estate for things that aren't actually content.
PS - thanks to H for the settings help! The SMF default curves basically returns it to how it used to be. I'm happy now :)
-
I am really not having the mobile issues that others seem to be having...
Glad you found some reprieve, Yellow, either way. It's your participation that is important to me, whatever aesthetic value facilitates that ;).
-
I really like the format. I think the chinks will work themselves out, as I have faith in the BanHammer! I would like for Wilshire/Madness to try an different color scheme though and see what kind of reactions other feel about it. I do think a darker background would be more appealing, but that's just nitpicking. I think this is great, and to me, it seems mobile-friendly enough...once the kinks are worked out.
-
I really like the new styling. I agree with MSJ a slightly darker background would be better - I think it would make the whole site easier on the eyes in terms of strain.
Nice job :)
-
Thanks MSJ. I appreciate the confidence.
Yeah once someone has time to take a look at the code and figure out which variable to change, we should be able to make the overall background less abbrasive. Though, know that it will never be a dark background with light text :) .
-
Alright, changed a few things. Home page should look less snow-blind-white.
Still hunting for other options to change so those colors are carried throughout. - Found it. Things are now vaguely grey. Let me know how it looks to you all, please.
Problem is, you can't see the changes until you clear your browser of cached data from this site. Check it out in a chrome Incognito browser, or firefox Private browser, to see the changes if you'd prefer not clear your data yet - further changes to come.
Unfortunately, I don't know a work around or a specific way to target cached data for just TSA, someone else might have to chime in for those directions.
Found some options, see below:
Chrome:
Open Developer tools (Press F12)
In your regular browser (not within the developer tools that you just opened) Press and HOLD the normal refresh button. A dropdown menu should appear
Select: "Empty Cache and Hard Reload" (probably the last option)
Firefox:
In regular Firefox, you can go to Options->Privacy->History where there the last sentence says: "You may want to clear your recent history, or remove individual cookies." Hit that last part and scroll down until you find the cookies from Second-Apocalypse.com and remove them.

Indeed. It bothers me to no end and can result in tracers and headaches. Like I love Fantasy Faction (http://fantasy-faction.com/) but I can't read more than a handful of their articles at a time without feeling like my eyes are going to bleed.
Otherwise, thanks for all your work, Wilshire. Much appreciated.
-
The way it is now is light-years better than that maddening white to just slightly off-white juxtaposition.
Thanks W.

Huzzah. Thanks for letting me know. I'm not much of a color scheme guy, so I'll take suggestions if someone thinks different colors make sense, and now that I found what code to change it should be easier this time around.
I know some stuff is still super bright and I'm still looking to fix it so its more uniform. Slow going for someone who doesn't know anything about html/bbcode/etc. I don't even know what I'm looking for most of the time lol.
Like looking for a slightly bent needle in a pile of needles.

Hey, brute force is a valid tactic. Frankly, most things I do are the roundabout way.
When I get a few spare minutes with Photoshop, I'll try to make a new icon to replace the silly SMFTricks thing at the top for us.

Already accomplished, just need to figure out how to get it in there ;).
Though, in your opinion, would Gold or Red be better (have both, just says Second Apocalypse but looks like the TDTCB original font title)?

I personally think Gold (as long as it is a darker gold) would be better.
The path for the image shows it as Themes/YorkyTheme/images/theme/logo.png so I think you should be able to follow that to it and then replace it. Not sure if it has to be a png, although it would if it has the transparency.
-
.png doesn't seem to work with this theme - another question I have for the creators - as, as far as I can tell, this is why we've lost the Chorae icon...
Smdh.

That's odd, because the logo that is there is a png. If I remember correctly, there are multiple "formats" to a png, so it may be picky...

png as logo (new) seems to work fine.

I'm still slowly getting used to the new theme (liking it more and more, though) but I confess I miss the small Chorae icons.

I can't find an option to change it, but the path is Themes/YorkyTheme/images/theme/cover.jpg so I guess it can only be changed globally.

Bad news then. Might be looking at the bloke for some time, instead of the image (http://orig07.deviantart.net/6a90/f/2017/010/c/2/image_by_quintvc-dauxjv7.jpg) I wanted to change it too before we put it too a vote.

I vote for that over "The Fett."

Hello!
I have a bit of a problem. It seems that during registration process my IP was somehow permanently banned. Maybe the system disliked the e-mail I first tried registering with (it was on mail.ru domain, and I use it as just an e-mail), maybe something different happened, but now I can only access this forum through an anonymizer. Needless to say, that's very inconvenient. Can something be done to fix it?
I can't really confirm it, but I'm not a spammer or a bot, I'm just looking to have a discussion about the Second Apocalypse.
My usual IP is 195.211.79.96
-
Ah. Do you have a non .ru email address? We get hundreds of .ru bot registers a week, and since we couldn't fix the problem I had to ban the domain.
I can lift the ban and figure something else out if you can't register otherwise though. One real user is worth all the boots :)
-
Oh, and I banned you manually otherwise because of various hits on forum spam loggers. Not your fault I suppose, let me take a look and see if I can't fix it.
-

Yes, I figured as much, Russian spam-bots are a blight. I registered this account with another e-mail, so there is no reason to lift the ban. Also, now I can access the forum normally. Thank you!
-
Wilshire directed me on how to fix it.
Let us know if you experience similar problems without your anonymizer.

Well, I lifted the blanket ban, I'll try to figure out something more tactful, though I may have to bring it back. Glad you're able to make it - if you have any issues please email me at anasurimborwilshire@gmail.com
-
Thank you all again! Presently everything works.
-
Looks like the Modify button should work on mobile. Please post here if you experience any other issues. Thanks.

So I've been using Tapatalk to lurk lately and just logged on via desktop after a long while...
I know it's still under construction but I'm REALLY digging the new theme. Very clean and easy to read and interact with. Not sure if you'll keep it or what more work might be done but just wanted to give some kudos to the team.
-
Thanks, Bolivar :).
Though, really, Wilshire picked the furniture and did all the heavy lifting ;).

I've been having some issues with the new format as of the last few days... The top menu that includes replies, new posts, messages etc. is not showing up and when I click the home button it sort of spazzes out and shows a form of that menu as a side bar for like a split second then it disappears... Just means I can't check my new replies and shit like that. Not a HUGE problem, but fairly annoying as it's hard to respond to people. speaking of which, I also get this problem where on certain threads (of course the most interesting ones grr) the text box that has the different fonts, message icons, and the writing box itself, basically the box I'm writing in right now, isn't there... and I can't write anything. pretty frustrating. Lol, joins forum, 3 days later complains about the forum :-* love you all, thanks!
-
I have a theory! I think it's showing me the mobile site for some reason (even though I'm on a laptop) Because the mobile site has a side bar menu like mine is trying to do, instead of a top bar. So I guess mine is just sort of stuck between the two? Idk, let me know what you think. Thanks!
-
Solved it, right?
-
Yes! Solved! Sorry forgot to mention on this thread, ignore my previous statements! (All thanks goes to the obviously out-of-the-box thinking wilshire for his inspirational insight into the fullscreen function :P)
