The Thousandfold Thought / TTT - First US Overlook Edition
« on: July 26, 2023, 06:13:18 am »
Hi everyone

I hope someone is still around here to answer my question - don't worry, it's not about where R. Scott Bakker is and when a new book is coming out. :-)

I'm planning to revisit all the books, and as a sort of ritual I was looking at all my US Overlook Hardback first editions. I'm pretty sure I sought out and purchased all the true first editions back in the day. I might (probably) have forgotten about an oddity amongst all of them, namely TTT.

All of them actively mentioned First Edition, except for TTT. Can someone confirm this for me? I'll add a (shitty, but serviceable) picture of the publisher page, to double check. If this one might have slipped through the cracks, could someone upload the publisher page of the first true edition US Overlook so I can look for the right one?

You can see the pictures here.

As you can see, there is no mention of it being a "First Edition", as with the other books. The 1, however, is there at the back of the row of numbers.

I'm still quite sure that it is a 2nd printing, because of the missing "First Edition" and the fact that, in comparison to the other two TPON volumes, these pages are much more yellow and of less quality (book weighs less as well).

Could you compare it with your first volumes and let me know what it looks like (mention of "First Edition", quality of paper and where the 1 is located).

I guess I'll start my search to replace this edition.  ;)

Glad to see everyone is still trying to find the First Editions. It's been a while since I made my Second Apocalypse account for that specific reason. Happy to be back after finishing TGO.

I'm proud to say, I'm now the owner of all the hardback Overlook covers in First Edition. This is largely thanks to Wilshire's help, so I'm happy to see him posting about this again. I do have a remark about the TTT edition (see below).

I might look for some signed first Canadian versions in the future, but for now I'm quite happy with my collection. I would love to see some information on what to look out for (numbers, physical traits) when it comes to first Canadian Editions. A breakdown of the existing Unproofed and Advanced Reading Copy Editions (both Overlook and Canadian Penguin), would be a superb addition to this post as well.

TTT, as far as I can tell, they only did 1 print run, and while lots of them have been remaindered (black mark on the pages at the bottom in sharpie), they are generally not too difficult to find and shouldn't be too pricey.  You should expect to pay more for one that isn't remaindered.

Like I mentioned above, I have one remark. All of my Overlook hardcover editions mention that they are First Editions, from PON to TGO, except for TTT. I've seen you mention a second edition of TDTCB with less quality paper, etc. This seems to happen with my version of TTT as well. So maybe there IS a second print run, my line starts with 2 and like I said, no mention of First Edition. Can you clarify this for me (i.e. tell me how yours looks)?

So far I was able to find

The Warrior-Prophet
The Thousandfold Thought

The Judging Eye

But all are pretty banged up. Two of them obviously come from a smoking home (different sellers!), and have yellowed pages. All of them show some wear on the pages, foxing on the dust jacket. One of them had paint on it for some reason, luckily I got that off.

Is this a pattern of all R. Scott Bakker readers? They mutilate their books?  ;D

In any case, if someone comes across an extra mint copy of any of the 5 books, except The Warrior-Prophet (that one is acceptable) please let me know. Maybe we can work something out.

Cheers

Wilshire,

Would you be willing to post pictures from your Hardback covers (all 5 books), Overlook Editions, both Front and information Page so I can compare it with the things I find online. It's more difficult than I expected, especially not completely destroyed editions ... :-/

Thanks :)

I was thinking of getting the Rankine versions. But I am kind of a neurotic. So if I find out that there is another first edition (for instance USA vs CAN releases), I'll go out and replace the one(s) I have. I'd like to avoid this :) the proofs and the ARCs are in a league of their own in my opinion.

So I am thinking Rankine first/first CAN edition. Anyone disagree? If not, any additional information to track them down would be appreciated.

Thanks for the replies so far everyone. And I agree, Bakker is mysterious even when it comes to the releases.

And finally Wilshire, you do know how to make a man jealous of your book collection! That was quite a lot of info!

General Earwa / First Editions of the Second Apocalypse Books

Hi everyone

I have been reading the Second Apocalypse books for quite a while now (probably some of the only books I've read more than once), and now I'm looking to buy the original (first edition) hard cover versions of the books to showcase and remind me of their brilliance every time I pass them.

Problem is, I can't get any straight answer from browsing through abebooks.com. So my question is, if anyone here knows the actual true first editions.

Here are some problems I'm dealing with:

- I'm pretty sure that the first editions are Canadian, but the information on them is very sparse (sometimes no hard cover in existance, etc.). Usually you get the American edition marked as the first edition. So that's confusing.

- With some books, you also have a unedited version of the original transcript for sale (they look pretty legit). I'm wondering what the big differences are (if any), and if that is considered a true first edition.

Anybody who can help me out? I'd appreciate it a lot!

Thanks
