Aurang really shouldn't have gone out like a chump. How you build up a dude for 7 books and take him out in 2 pages? I feel like Bakker was the one guy who was gonna deliver the goods since I've been feeling like tons of works lately have been guilty of this, though I can't name any off the top of my head. But nope.

With this fight in particular I think it was just to show how much MORE Kellhus was than literally everyone else.  The scene against Meppa was pretty awesome, but Aurang?  Ain't nobody got no time for no AURANG...And I also thought that most of the sorcerer-ie battles that were not in the POV of one of the fighters were kind of lack-luster.  No suspense, just destruction.  Except for the tumbling of the Towers.  That was awesome.

We've been getting that for 7 books. It just gets old.

Yeah.  It would have been nice, I think, if the Great Ordeal(the book itself) had gone until they reached Golgotterath, and the entire Unholy Consult would have been the fight.  Way more breathing room for the epic one on ones we had been hoping for, more introspection on why the Consult did this or that.  We all have wishes, do we not?  All I can do now is make the most sense of what we have been given.

The Unholy Consult / Re: [TUC Spoilers] Shauriatas

Assuming Shauriatas is the mutilated:

1. There is the possibility you imply, that Aurax has actually been like this for a very long time and his psychological condition has nothing to do with the Dunyain. Possible since he doesn't seem to get out much (Unless that was Aurax in the epilogue of Warrior Prophet). Although that raises the question of what the hell happened to him in the first place.

2. Aurax sided with the Dunyain in a failed coup and Shauriatas was very mad. This would be contingent on the variant of the theory of Shauriatas taking over the Dunyain in a hostile fashion.

3. It's some kind of trick to cozen Kellhus and Aurax isn't actually that whipped. Kellhus hasn't had a ton of practice reading Inchoroi.

Those are the only possibilities I can think of.

Aurax has just become less with age, I think.  And they weren't exactly shining stars among the Inchoroi to begin with, right?

And, should this Doomsult theory hold true, then I hold that the Dunyain and Shauriatas are symbiotic, but the Dunyain still strive for domination, as always.  I think if Shauriatas is there, he is there in whispers, maybe not even spoken aloud by the Dunyain.  He has become, after so long, just another tool.

A year AFTER all they mysterious deahs that Bakker RAFO'ed?  An object of the Daimos, no less?  Human souls, faithful to Kellhus, on the eternal vigil for all things Outside-ie?  Maybe the same for the hearth thing he has in his quarters.

Also, how exactly is a Wathi doll made?  They ever mention it?

Oh, and a side-note, would Ajokli looking into the Inverse fire just see, like a closed circuit TV broadcast of his living room?  Makes a bit more sense, then, his answer about what he observed.

So Bakker straight up said Kellhus' goal was to stop the Resumption of the No-God and save the world.

"Think of the gradual possession suffered by Sorweel whilst wearing the Amiolas. Kellhus knew something was up, but the 10-sided die was cast. The great weakness of the Dunyain is the weakness discovered by Moenghus. For all the power of their intellect, their spirit is actually quite weak."

This quote indicates to me that Kellhus DIDN'T want Ajokli there, or couldn't stop him, so he maybe had to make other plans.  It also indicates(again, to me at least) that much of what Kellhus said, maybe since the very beginning of the Golden Room scenes, was all Ajokli, and not Kellhus.

He was already coy about the Shauriyain...Dunriatis...Shaeonanyain...Dunonanra.. theory in the Q&A.   But I'm not sure it's the same as the thing we missed about the Consult.  It might be? But it doesn't explain the Consult's lack of thinking/sane manpower over the years which the missing revelation should apparently address.

Lol how about the Doomyain?

To be fair, Kellhus was simply too powerful, too close to the all-seeing, all-knowing.  His character has dominated for 7 books simply because there is no-one more potent.  He really HAD to die for anyone else's actions to actually mean a damned thing.  I still think we'll be seeing him again in some form, but never again in the all-powerful position he occupied from the end of the Thousand Fold Thought through the Golden Room.

More than anything I want to know where Kellhus went, I know Bakker says he's dead, but what about his soul? Did he achieve oblivion/absolute? My head hurts

Nobody in the AMA that I saw actually straight up asked Bakker where Kellhus went or why Ajokli couldn't find him, but my guess is we would be treated to a big fat RAFO.  Still, that would be nice, just as a confirmation one way or the other.

25
The RAFOs
  1.  Significance of the 4121 deaths
  2.  People of Eanna...he RAFO'ed this like 4 times
  3.  Any mention of the potential survivors of the Ordeal
  4.  The Heron Spear

Confirmed we are gonna see Meppa again.  This pleases me.

He dodged the SHIT out of the statement regarding Shauriatis' fate, while in the same breath destroyed the Mangaecca.

Best quote for me "There's the matter of the last surviving full Dunyain Anasurimbor on the loose--that's what's been commanding my attention most these days."

Also his statement that he is now an exploratory writer.  Makes me a wee bit afraid for the No-God.  The whole exploratory writing thing never really sat well with me in the epic fantasy genre.  It's why I never really enjoyed Song of Ice and Fire.  There's no fun in re-reads when the man is just making up shit as he goes.  Read it once, experience it, then on the shelf it goes, to rot forever more.

All in all, a good solid chunk of shit that confirms(to me, anyway) that some of our crackpot theories are at least swinging in the proper direction, even if they remain crackpot.  I hope he manages to get back on and put some more down, so that I can such it dry(phrasing...boom!).

For the End.  "So did the Great Ordeal of Anisurimbor Kellhus perish in salt butchery."  I think that's how it went.

I see this being a slow-mo, 300 style panning around as the sorcerers tumble as salt statues from the sky and men die at the foot of the mountains.

And pretty much anything from Two Steps from Hell is pretty epic enough to serve.

They may have destroyed Dagliash to hide something?  That pause that Kellhus takes while staring at the device bugs me.  Apparently, it's what showed him he was striving against Dunyain, but maybe me missed at least a piece of what they were up to.  Did they find something in Viri after all?  Something work destroying vice potentially being discovered by the enemy?

Probably off topic, but there was a forum where Bakker almost casually mentions that the Tusk was a Consult contrivance, and it has steered men since their passage from Eanna(misspelled?), basically demanding the death of the Nonmen, and sorcerers, but acknowledging the existence and even the names of the Gods. Why would it do that?  The Consult wanted the Cishaurim dead.  And that God.  Damned.  Nail of Heaven floating around that I KNOW can't just be a star.  Too much about the Consult we just don't have the right perspective on to allow us to even ask the right questions.  It's an itch, but I'm not sure where it is, so I can't scratch it.  Drives me crazy, but in a good way.

It seemed at first in the Judging Eye that he was going to be headed in the generational direction, i.e. the old characters were now more scenery and plot points than characters, but he zigged on us, going back to almost ALL the old characters AS characters.  The only ones of the Old Guard left though is Achamian, and, if you count her, Esmenet.  Gotta have some new blood, or at the very least, some new POVs of TAE characters in the No-God.  No matter what, though, very much looking forward to the end of the world.

I remember wondering the same thing about Kelmomas/Samarmas given he/they are one of the Few but it seems to be rendered a moot point now. It's an interesting question though, since there's a distinction in this universe between a soul and a mind. I really don't know how it would work.

We don't really know much of anything, do we?  Still fun to swing away in the darkness, and see what shakes out.  That is a mix of metaphors, I am sure(like, 83.5% sure), but I like it, and am therefore using it.

On an aside note I was shocked to find after being basically a nonentity for over half this series Serwa ended but being one of my favorite characters. Bakker's pacing is so...odd.

I read somewhere that Bakker was reading one of the Song of Ice and Fire books, and realized that Martin had made a bunch of new characters mostly because he was bored of the old ones.  Bakker realized he had, and was, doing the same thing in the Aspect Emperor.  I don't remember when he had this revelation, but maybe it made him slow his roll as far as rolling out substantive traits and plot points for his new characters, and instead hoarding them until the very end, and, presumably, the No-God series.

Or maybe he really really REALLY likes fucking with us.  So, like a 50/50 chance? :D
