Literature / Re: Quotes from Classics
« on: August 14, 2017, 06:22:14 pm »
Thanks, Hiro. Next time I talk to Cam I'll remind him to check this thread out.

Classic for me anyway, HP Lovecraft:

I never ask a man what his business is, for it never interests me. What I ask him about are his thoughts and dreams.

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."
My favourite Lovecraft quote. I shiver every time I read it.

Good one Red! Very Bakker-y as well.

Has somebody read the Gormenghast series by Mervyn Peake?

I listened to the first one.  I think I missed a few things, but I thought it was pretty good.

Yah! Gormenghast,  --- Hiro jumping up and down, waving his arms ---, it's absolutely brilliant!!

Know what you're getting into, though. The buildup is very, very slow, but the writing is never less than impressive, creative, funny, poetic, incisive etc. You should be ready to slow down and concentrate on the scene or even sentence at hand, instead of wishing to rush to see where things are going. And all this buildup gets terrific, I say fabulous payoffs later on. Peake can write ANYTHING. Great characters, decor, humor, atmosphere, action, set pieces (oh boy!)...go for it!

To warm you up, I have put several quotes here:

From what I have seen in the forum so far, the untrained Dûnyain Boy will be taught: Meta-Psûkhe,  Meta-Gnosis, Meta-Daimos, will he outsmart the 4 Dûnyain, will save the world, will destroy the Consult and the Horde completely and will solve the Ozone problem. :P

LOL  ;D

Carrying on where I left off, the plot-convenience machine is further revving up. I have to put my hands on my ears now and then because it's so noisy. As if I'm watching a summary, the drama and plot on fastforward. Not a lot of scenes have much to offer beyond their plot purpose, variations of: 'Hey I'm looking for you for this thing...' / 'Sure, I'll drop e'thing, let's go...'

On the other hand, this show does look better each season. That Eastwatch matte painting, the dragon, the ravens, wow. Cersei's good.

The sranc take Amazon.es!!!, I will never buy another book from them. Now they tell me that I will receive my TUC copy in a fucking week when it was supposed to be received today. And they give me no fucking explanation. I will descend upon them as a hunger.

¡Qué raro! I've had much better experiences with Amazon. Although I've never used Amazon.es. Usually their customer service is top notch, what's up in Spain?!

One of the reasons I stopped reading GRRM's serie was that the waiting was not worth it anymore for me. This is another reason why I appreciate Bakker's work ethic. I started reading just before TGO was published though, so I missed out on the gap before that one. Still...!

At least something finally happened.

More obvious set up though.  Arya most probably will kill the Night King with that dagger.

Also, anyone know WTF Bran said to Littlefinger right after he handed him the dagger?  It sounded like English but damned if my wife or I could make heads or tails of it...

"Chaos is a ladder..."

What is the purpose of the Ekkinû? Who took it from the Umbilicus and why?
