I liked the first one a lot...a LOT.

I had a really hard time getting into the second book (the current one atm). But it gets better and better. I am 100 pages before the end. And i can tell you, if you are a fan of philosophical fantasy (and if you really are a fan of TSA, then you are) you need to read it.
To be honest, as far as non-artificial (as in made-up) depth and real world applicability and examination goes...this trumps Scott's philosophy (TSA philosophy, that is), sorry to say (even if Erikson is not a scholar of philosophy). So much more...punch in it (and as said, applicability).

Wil & Madness - yes, i guess i should have waited a few more days...the thread with Scott answering so many questions kind of makes my thread here more or less redundant ^^

Also, maybe i should have browsed a bit more, i admit. Although on first glance i didn't see a dedicated thread to musings for details explicitly after TUC.

Anyway... i guess we can close this thread (or not, some interesting points are being discussed that had nothing to do with my relatively light opening post)

It just has its very own charm, so to speak, to talk in real time with fellow fans instead of the usual post structure. I know i will not make up for missed quorum "talks" in other post count. So i am not even sure that this is what it is. We probably have new members and also returning, older members who want to post about TUC and/or TGO atm.

So as said, i do hope you bring it back. It is its own thing...and it was something TSA had (a tradition, if you will) that no other forum i frequent has. I don't think you should kill it.
(mind you, this is speaking from a user stand point. If it is just too much trouble to implement it and/or keep it running, then that is another story entirely)

On a more serious note...please bring it back. It's what made this forum special vis-a-vis other fantasy book forums (ok that and its...special...members ). I love the quorum.

I like your measuring-stick, so to speak, almost nothing made a splash like Vampire when it came out. So yeah... lol. 7th Sea was big enough in its day. As i said, when you got your game picked up by WotC, THE rpg publisher, then yeah, you did it. But as you said, anyway... (as an aside, i am not sure i'd want to use 7th Sea mechanics for Earwa...if i'd take roll&keep system, which i really like, btw, i'd take the L5R implementation...it's grittier).

I agree with the two approaches you cite. It's more or less what i tried to say in my post before yours.

Save or die is indeed quite frustrating. Especially if it is just one roll for a very important situation. Although in the case of PoN and AE...it might be appropriate ^^

Very much agreed on the suspense thing. There needs to be risk and characters should die...especially if they do stupid and/or careless things. Dying in an unimportant encounter is frustrating but i think it very much depends on how that encounter happened. If it's the players fault they got into such an encounter, death is fair game for me. As i said, if players rush into things foolishly, they have to be prepared for anything. Especially in a world like Bakker's.

Dancer's Lament is not bad. But it's nothing to write home about. I mean if you dig the Malazan universe, you absolutely have to read it. So much gold. But as far as writing goes it's just OK.

Although i do have to say that if you find Erikson to heavy/dense, than maybe Esslemont is where it is at with Malazan. Because while he might not be on a level with Erikson and Bakker in his writing, he still is better than a lot of other fantasy out there.

Funny how tastes differ eh? I can't really get most of the criticisms of the last two pages..especially if you are a fan of TSA. Because a lot of things that can be said about Malazan can be said about TSA.

I have to admit, lately, both authors have disappointed me. I found the latest offers of both to be ... lacking. Fun fact : the thing that you guys seem to think is Erikson's big problem was the problem for me with Bakker's latest....fucking slow and boring until the last 100 pages...but those last 100 pages...oh boy...made up for the whole slog of the first part.

I really do hope though that Bakker gets back on his feet, so to speak. I think the last book tried too hard. He talked himself in some corners with his "explanations". Anyway, this is an Erikson thread, i should talk about Bakker in the threads dedicated to his work.
