Cynical Cat is referring to the appendix of characters not the back-back of the book. The list of characters was certainly written by Bakker.

Without Serwe no one tells Kellhus and Cnaiur about the Holy War. No one tells them about the Holy War, Kellhus kills Cnaiur and makes a beeline for Kian. Kellhus is killed outright because he's a Norsirai. Serwe is critical to Kellhus's anagnorisis in the first book and completely alters his plans.

That's only from a plotting standpoint, nevermind thematic content.

Would like to learn the etymology of Golgotterath, whatever that happens to mean in Kuniuric.

Hmm.  I feel like the Consult would be incentivized to make sure the Shrial forces succeed, no? Anything to destroy the Mandate and remove as many of the Few as possible. Having a major school control High Ainon implicitly helps the Mandate maybe—at least during the war. Drawing away resources that the Shrial forces would use to fight the Mandate to commit to an Ainon front, they were apparently besieging Atyersus for a few years.  What do the Consult have to gain by giving the Scarlet Spires more institutional power?

Thought I agree with MG's sentiment that the line about the physical fortress of Kiz 'rearing into the void, the horns' or some such, immediately recalls Golgotterath. Also Achamian's line about Gologotterath and the Scarlet Spires as being the only places in the world more heartless than Atyersus.

I'm super late on this train. Apologies.

Sarothesser IX is the King of High Ainon in this short story. I assume he was killed at the end there, which then would make Prince Horziah the Horziah III who is the last reigning King. Really curious about some more details because there is supposedly a battle between a royalist army and Spires-aligned army which results in the defeat of Horziah. Not surprising, he seems like a real ditz. Also interesting because this short story seems to present a full coup against the Royal House of Sarothesser but we know for a fact that there is more Royalist/Spires conflict incoming.

The Glossary states that the Scholastic Wars were from 3796-3818, so the Scholastic War has been going on for at least 5 years at the point of this story. Clearly not in High Ainon because things seem pretty calm, if a bit tense.

Cool that Sranc are such a hot commodity in High Ainon that they have Ainoni trading depots in Thunyerus and profitable relationships with certain tribes. Seem like antique precursors to the Scalpoi.

Oh completely.  I'm just reciting all the contradictory info we have on the matter.

I want the Ordeal to look to the south and hear a loud droning, then see what looks like a horde of locusts on the horizon—then realize that it's a legion of Nonmen Chariots ready to rain death from above on the hordes of the Consult and the Erratic Quya.

If that image is in TUC I will be satisfied.

I should clarify a little.  When Achamian is giving his speech to the Great Names at the end of Warrior Prophet, he specifically says that Cet'ingira revealed the location of the Min-Uroikas to Shae. But the Glossary states that he revealed it to the Mangaecca much much earlier in 777. The Glossary also states that the Mangaecca had been excavating Min-Uroikas for centuries before Shae had reportedly found a way to undo scriptural damnation. The False Sun shows us that Min-Uroikas had not been opened before 1115ish because of Shae's know-how, but it also says something about how Cet'ingira had shown previous Grandmasters of the Mangaecca Anochirwa, so they had been apparently trying to open the Ark for some time.

I should cap this by saying that the stuff in False Sun is probably semi-canon until otherwise noted by Bakker and that the Mighty Author himself has said that the Glossary is full of unreliable narrator stuff—so who can say.

Where are you getting the 200 years?—that isn't some in my memories banks so I may have forgotten.

There are some continuity snag around this.  In the TTT glossary it says that Mek revealed the location of Min-Uroikas to the Mangaecca in 777, but some of the things in The False Sun seem to run contrary to that. The Mangaecca only entered the Ark super recently because of Shae, so only 1115 or whenever, a few years before The False Sun.

But to the point, Cet'ingira is hated because he stole the Heron Spear from Ishterebinth ~750 Year of the Tusk. He's sorta been a rogue agent that the Mangeccas were harboring. I'm also sure that Nil'giccas wanted him brought to justice.

The one thing I absolutely hate about The False Sun is that they call Aurang, Aurang. Aurang is the epithet the Kuniuri gave him!—which is not a kingdom/language that will exist for many centuries. Surely they would call him Sin-Pharion, or the Umeri would have some other name for him.

The Great Ordeal / Re: [TGO SPOILERS] Inchoroi Weaponry
« on: September 10, 2016, 12:00:07 am »
Not sure where to put this, a quick thought under "Inchoroi Weaponry" seems relevant enough to discussion about the No-God. Had a weird conclusion as I was randomly reading about Minoan burials at Knossos.

Sarcophagus means "flesh-eater" in Greek.  I think Bakker is way too much of a classicist for this to be some random creative choice for the Carapace of the No-God to be referred to as a black sarcophagus over and over and over.

We've been saying continuously that the No-God needs to feed upon souls so as to have enough metaphysical juice to be launched, but I think this we may have had it reversed. The No-God consumes the material remains of ensouled beings so that their souls can go to the Black Heaven or whatever.

The repudiation of material reality/existence and reaching some spiritual nirvana automatically made me think of Koringhus committing suicide. Not sure if this means anything at all. But I think the etymology of sarcophagus and its repetition might be a big clue to something bigger.

That would be amazing. He's the only key god that you didn't do art for.
They have a deal.

As much as I love the pronoun game, don't really know what you are talking about, Callan.

Have nothing to add really. Just want to reiterate from ye old film threads that my perfect casting for Saubon would be Daniel Craig, and Ron Perlman voicing Aurang, which would just be next level.

Hey Somnambulist, I don't know if you do requests. But could do a piece for Husyelt the Dark Hunter to complement all the other Gods you've done? That would be amazing. He's the only key god that you didn't do art for.

Also, I'm just dumping random shit in this thread for a second opinion.  Skauras's epithet is "Sutis Sutadra" by the Nansur—the Southern Jackal. Sutadra is the Fanim heretic in the Skin Eaters—the Jackal. It's probably an assumed name. But is "sutadra" Sheyic or Kiani? If the Nansur were to name an enemy that was intradiegetically different than english=sheyic would it be High Sheyic then? But then why would a Fanim heretic give himself a pseudonym in Sheyic and not Kiani?

What would you guys call a polity specific name of Kian? The Kingdom of Conriya. The Nansur Empire. The Nilu Confederacy.  The Padirajate of Kian?  I don't know. Is there something specific for that in the books?
