Title: Grim Tidings Bakker Interview Questions
Post by: Madness on June 20, 2016, 05:36:14 pm
Rob, I believe robmatheny80 here, one half the hosts of Grim Tidings Podcast (http://thegrimtidingspodcast.podbean.com/) - for which we have a thread here (http://www.second-apocalypse.com/index.php?topic=1767.0) - has posted to Grimdark Fiction Readers & Writers on hoping to source questions (https://www.facebook.com/groups/grimdarkfiction/permalink/1713410485599720/) for their podcast with Bakker this Saturday!

Lol - yours looks to be one of three questions on there, Q :).

Rob did say they wanted two questions from the forum to go with the ones they choose from facebook.

They had to delay recording so there's still time to get a question in on this topic. Something to prompt Bakker to wax philosophic, perhaps :)?

Still looking? ->

What was his goal when he set out to write TSA? Riches? Fame? Inciting literary riots that would topple the genre?
Does he feel so far that  that this goal has been accomplished? Has it changed? If not yet accomplished, does it look like by the end of TUC that he'll succeed?

Yeah, I think Rob's going to reach out again before they actually interview Bakker?

The questions are on Grimdark Fiction R&Ws so far:

"As someone who would like to read your fiction but is somewhat intimidated by it, do you have any suggestions on getting started?"

"r. scott. sup? it's Quint VonCanon admirer and almost perfect instrument of the Logos (nearly had it two times last week) anyhoo my question is where can i get a good Benjuka Travel set? and a copy of Chav Times? shiny truth! Q"

Lol - and Rob was hoping to have two or three from us. I think yours is good, Wilshire.

Apparently, this is back on track so in lieu of any other questions in this thread, I'll be giving the Grim Tidings hosts some of my own.

But a couple more days to get some questions in :)!

I havea couple:

1.) Where does Theliopa's name come from?  All of Kellhus' other children have names that can be traced in influences in the books.

2.) Are skin-spies really as new as the Mandate seem to think?  There are a number of things that can be explained by them being far older, plus a quote from one of them stating they are "impossibly ancient."

I will pass those along when I touch base with Rob today, H.

I'm really excited for this podcast. Rob and Phil are great hosts and often this translates into remarkable interviews.

Looking forward to it.

Same here. I'm pretty excited, as this isn't a medium that Bakker participates in much and I think that Rob and Phil have that great capacity to prompt their guests into a lull of insightful commentary.

i listened to the whole thing and though i thought i went well....i detected discrepancies in scott's voice. so....yeah, scott's been killed and replaced by a skin-spy.

...so.....thoughts?

Hopefully he was dead before the defiling began.

That was my first time listening to them, it was a pretty great show. I think Bakker should look into getting himself out there via the spoken word more, since it's easier for people to misinterpret your statements and get angry when it's written.

Does anyone else register a tonal distinction at ~2:55 when Scott says 'Dragons'? From what I've heard of him, that's not how he speaks and I don't think it was just put on.

For me it's like I heard a different voice come out - it reminds me of a comedian who does caricatures and though (or because of being) an intelligent person, they utterly disappear personality wise when it comes to the caricature. It's like they summon some other person for awhile - and I wouldn't be surprised if writers do in order to write POVs.

And maybe sometimes they summon themselves...

Ah, just take it as a spooky story if you want, I'll accept that interpretation! :)

Likely not ;).

Indeed.

As Bolivar mentioned, I think another piece of listening to him speak is that his personality comes through a whole lot more. So in this instance, based on previous interaction, he's making a bit a joke in that "people can't resist Fantasy with Dragons, see popularity of A Game of Thrones."

At the very least I think it's more expressing 'him included' than a joke!
