Also, in the Inverse Fire, Aurang is described as the Prince of the Inchoroi, which to me is another Prince of Nothing.
Inchoroi means "People of Emptiness" in Nonman speak right?

Yes.

Why should the Few exhaust themselves so some soldiers don't have to walk?  Sorcery is demanding and barring crossing huge obstacles like the river, it's simply a bad idea.  The chariots, which are cool, require trained drivers, horses that won't panic, and a sorcerer strong enough to sustain the cant.  It's probably pretty demanding and not worth the effort except in situations where you have a badass Nonman Quya and you want to cover a lot of Sranc haunted wilderness quickly.

As for the Tekne, the Consult have had a lot of time to search the vast halls of the Ark and find anything left behind.  They have also mastered enough of the Tekne so that they can create new abominations like Skin Spies.  If there was anything left behind or forgotten in a dark corner they may have found it and it's possible they have reclaimed sealed or damaged rooms.  In additions, they might be able to fix, recharge, or jury rig devices from whatever they have found based on the skills they now possess.

This will be criticized for being more examples of Bakker's horrible misogyny but I think it's the opposite. It's some really extreme feminist message at this point.

That's the impression I get from it as well.  Bakker's writing fantasy as if it was as nasty as real life, and in many ancient cultures being lower class and/or a woman was a life full of suck.  In the Prince of Nothing, all the terrible shit that happened with Esmenet filled me with outrage for the unfairness of it, not at the author but at the world that trapped her.  This is a series of books that has two different armies slaughter all their slaves, one of them taking slaves out into the wilderness knowing that they're going to have to kill them, and not one, but two world ending Apocalypses.   Bad things happen to powerless people and even power is no guarantee of safety.

It is great points made by CC, though I've always been firmly in the "fire and ruin" camp. I think Som makes a great point also, that most are already aligned with the Vile and you wouldn't want them on your side. But, how many are for the Consult simply because of Nin'Ciljaras being the Nonman King? What I am saying is, are a bunch of them going to be like, "Yay the Consult stooge is dead, glad I don't have to play along anymore.". Or, are they all Erratic and were truly all-in with the Consult's plan? I think Orinaral says that there is only a dozen or so that's Intact, so I think the odds of flipping the Erratics sides is probably a waste of time. Doesnt Serwe even comment that Ish is held by the Consult?

1) She's still wearing the collar, one that is crafted not to merely inflict pain but that also kills.  Sorcery isn't on the table as long as it is on.

2) All the Nonmen are damaged.  They are so damaged in fact that the son of their most hated traitor who was openly wearing the gifts of the Consult was allowed to become their king.  So she's going to have to deal with Nonmen who accepted the rule of a Consult ally as well as Erratics and the violent passions of the Tall.

She's going to have to wrangle the whole damaged group, a task which requires some kind of superhumanely perceptive and persuasive genius.  Oh wait, that's exactly who Kellhus sent.  With an added bonus, she has the best "make the enemy come over to my side with music" chops this side of Macross.

I do agree that this is going to be the death of the race and at her hand, but not by her sorcery.  She will lead them against their hated enemy so that they can reclaim a sliver of themselves and extract vengeance against those who murdered their race.

Yeah, not all the supporters of the Vile are dead but clearly circumstances have changed.  The giant with four Chorae in his armour who just killed the king is exhibit A in "things are not like they were an hour ago".  She might fry a couple of dudes, but she's here to crush the Consult and recruit allies.  The crushing Consult supporters bit is well in hand, now is the time to work the ghouls.  Or, more precisely, to continue working the ghouls she has been preparing with her singing.

Gardening is part of agriculture.  It's small scale agriculture and it requires a considerable amount of labor when you add it all up.  The Dunyain have enough space around them and probably enough manpower, but those Whale Mothers are going to require a lot of calories.  Adults doing hard physical labor also require a lot of food and you're going to need to generate a surplus to cover the bad years and up north there are going to be bad years.  So yeah, they can do it but there has to generate enough extra food to cover them, the Whale Mothers, the kids, the rooms full of defectives, and the surplus while living in a region with a limited growing season.  So they need a good sized work force.

Mimara forgives Galian for raping her because she can see the extent of his damnation and it is so horrific that she pities him.  She can't bear to add any more torment to what is due because what he will already suffer is so terrible already.  Galian is already literally so damned that he evokes sympathy from his victim.  The passage illustrates the Mimara is not so damaged as to be incapable of empathy and how terrible damnation is.  There is no indication that she has the power to forgive sins other than that of a person to forgive someone who has wrong him or her, although it would be really nice if she did.

General Earwa / Re: Why did the Nonmen teach Men the Gnosis?

There's one really obvious answer and the TGO confirms that's the case.  It's not even really a spoiler to talk about it, but out of respect of the board's spoiler policy I'm not going to say what it is.  Post the question in the TGO subforum and we can talk about it.

@Cynical Cat, those are all great points I haven't taking into account. Truly, with Nin'ciljaras dead and Orinaus also there what is the sense in killing potential allies? Great post.

Thank you.

The Dunyain would have to number in the hundreds at the least.  The room full of neuropunctured defectives not only requires producing enough defectives to match turnover but also enough food to feed them, the rest of the Dunyain, the unsorted children, and the Whale Mothers.  Ishual doesn't exactly have a year round growing climate and that's a lot of work.  Now Scott mentions that the Dunyain use labour to condition the body so I imagine that everyone works in the fields during the productive months and spends the winter hacking more passages in earth, but there needs to be a substantial agricultural labour force to support so many extra mouths.

I was a little disappointed in the Axotl Tank Whale Mothers (Dune's great, but its flawed as well as glorious and we've been there before), but this is partially ameliorated by Scott making clear the horror inherent in this concept.  Tongueless women strapped down with iron bands and condemned to an endless cycle to rape and pregnancy is pretty damn horrific.

I have to put myself in the mundane singing camp.

1) Metagnostic cants are Gnostic cants with two nonutterals.  They are more difficult and demanding to use that conventional cants, but allow new capabilities by having two nonutterals fix the uttered cant.  The collar works by interrupting an attempted cant with crippling pain (and possibly death in this case).  This means attempting a Gnostic cant is suicide and since the Metagnosis is even more demanding to use than the Gnosis, it is even less likely to succeed.

2) Serwa had previously intended to unleash wrack and ruin, but her intended targets are now dead.  Circumstances have changed and the actions needed to master the new circumstances have changed as well.

3) A major theme of the series is that the power of sorcery may be great but the power to command men is greater.  The liege of all sorcerers is more powerful than a sorcerer.  She has been honing her skills to take the minds and loyalties of the Nonmen and she bears a great portion of her father's gifts.  As her Dunyain father did when hanging from the circumflex, she will seize.

Literature / Re: YOU MUST TELL ME ... What else are you reading?

Picked up Half a War today.  The type is so huge I fear this will be a very short read.

It is as long as it needs to be to service the story, which is on the short side but it is good so rejoice.

I'm happy to see this thread and props to everyone working on expanding their reading list.  I'm a voracious reader myself so reading targets aren't really something I do, so no list for me.

The Thousandfold Thought / Re: Moenghus is a lying liar who lies
« on: August 12, 2016, 05:39:11 am »
Let me clarify.  Cnaiur's sorcerer is not a sorcerer of rank.  He's doing the same trick Akka does to communicate with the Mandate and Moenghus uses to contact the Dunyain:  he connects to a known location during dreams. The army marches to Joktha to await the fleet to take the Nansur home.  Mobile point.

That's not what happens with Skaurus, which is unique.  It's not a simple projection but an interactive event set place and time with Skaurus and an unknown number of Cishaurim on the other side and Moenghus and the Emperor on the other.  It's not on It probably only requires one Cishaurim on Skaurus's side because it seems to be a sorcery that requires more skill than brute strength, but we don't know either way.  It's a singular, prearranged incident its performed only by the Cishaurum but there is no indication that it couldn't be done by the other types of sorcerers.  That particular combination of ability, need, and circumstance doesn't show up again.

So we don't know for sure either way, but there are several things we do know about sorcery.  The all share the same broad capabilities.  All of them can do dream sending and Anagogic and Gnostic Sorcery tend to do complexity better that the Psukhe.  So we don't know for sure that the Scarlet Spires can or cannot match that feat, but we do know that the available evidence strongly suggests that they can.

The Cishaurim believe that their sorcery is the Water of Indara, but Kelhous's explanation indicates that's not how their sorcery functions.

At this point, either/neither explanation is still possibly false?

Sure.  We don't know for sure.  Kelhous's explanation is logically consistent and Titirga's experience seems to support it, so it's likely to be mostly accurate, but we don't know for sure.

instead cured of his blindness

Always wondered about this. I like locke's thought about vitamin deficiency but I do wonder if there isn't another in-world context that explains it.

Sorcery seems to be pretty useless for healing (except fpr cauterizing wounds) and vitamin deficiency blindness (as opposed to night blindness) appears to be permanent.  Cortical blindness, which can be congenital, is caused by blood flow problems in the brain and some victims do recover their sight over time.  So it is possible Titirga suffered from this, regained his sight, and then was train by Schoolmen.  A brain injury might also explain his fearsome rages.

All valid points.  I hadn't considered that particular aspect of the books until now, but yes princes of nothing abound.  There numbers only grow in the Aspect Emperor when we add Mimara, Cleric, Sorweel, and Fanayal.  One could also argue several other characters might qualify as well.
