General Earwa / Re: Dune (Frank Herbert) and TSA (Bakker)

Isn't curious that a book written 50 years ago could hold such surprises and a genre bending plot?

Looks like we have ourselves another Dune junkie ;). Welcome.

"And they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and before the elders. No one could learn that song except the 144,000
A nice reference to the number 144,000 and the concept of redemption/damnation in our earthly holy prophesies. Though I don't know why Bakker would integrate this into his story, I can't imagine this reference was lost on him.

There are plenty of half obscured references to be had for those willing to look. I find them interesting.

Yeah if you they don't 'perceive' time like we do then its hard to say how 'long' eternity is. Once you are outside, does the soul still see time in a linear fashion? To an objective person from Earwa, it may seem like eternity, but what about the subjective time of the soul experiencing the pain? Does eternity really even mean anything in a system that has no linear timeline? I have trouble comprehending what a timeless-space would be like.

This might have been brought up a few times but no harm in making a new topic.

I find the chances pretty slim that two disparate groups from light years apart both hold holy 144k. Far more likely they are tied together somehow (maybe the Gods that the Inchoroi have been fleeing from have something to do with this, so I suppose the first situation is possible if the Gods somehow revealed this to both groups).

I thought the circle amputees were all previous members of the Menggecca. I don't think the Consult are breeding humans, but thats not the main issue. All their experiments in the Pit of Obscenity would certainly create a topos. Did they know this would happen? Is it part of creating the No-God?

I don't know, but its an interesting idea that a race so terrified of death/hell would make a topos out of their home.

Akka is getting pretty old... maybe he joins up with the Consult and lives forever?

That would be an interesting turn for me as I feel Achamian will always oppose the No-God...

Thats how the Nonmen felt after centuries of war. What is a mere 50 years of Mandate teaching and Seswatha's everlasting soul compared to that?
I was mostly just saying this in jest though. Otherwise, if there is any time skip at all, Akka will need some serious help getting around.

Is Gin'y damned? He may be a tormented soul but he has spent eternity in the black pits of Cil'Aujas, which is a big topos. Men who spend a few days go crazy, imagine thousands of years (and then add to that the whole Erratic thing). The mind is a powerful thing and can make a hell of heaven, a heaven of hell.

Dragon's Dogma.
Kingdoms of Amalur.

I had a lot of fun playing Dragon's Dogma. I'd recommend it. If you get the Shivering Isles release it comes with an extra dungeon thats totally worth it. The combat is real time and, at least for me, extremely enjoyable. The level cap is 200 and there is a new game+ feature that some find entertaining. For me, leveling to 100+ in Shivering Isles and collecting some of the insane end-game gear was a lot of fun, probably spent 100 hours on it if not more. I with the dev team had more money, because this game could have been a real gem. Its dark and gritty, especial the option dungeon. Play it.

Also another with a good combat system was Kingdoms of Amalur. The team who put it together spent a ton of money on it, and it shows. End game is a bit underwhelming, but the crafting and leveling system is good and the story/sidequests are fun. Combat draws you and and keeps things entertaining for a while, though I would have loved to see some better post-game content (without DLC there isn't any to speak of, and I don't often do DLC). A much lighter atmosphere than Dragon's Dogma, and although shorter, still a great game in its own right.

Oops looks like I got distracted when typing. The sentence that you quoted ends with "is". I put in "sacrificed" after it so now it makes some sense.

Yeah if you read the quote quickly, the first conclusion is that angelic ciphrang exist and cannot be summoned. If you think about it though, he simply says that demonic ciphrang cannot be summoned, which doesn't prove that angelic ones exist. Though to be fair, why put in "demonic" at all if there was only one kind?j Such   words are just used for control  8)

But yeah, it makes sense to me, considering that there is another series, that by the end there will be a rather complete conclusion. Like you said, either they defeat the Consult or the No-God walks, or both. It would be too corny to have a big time jump (several hundred years) and come back in right before the Consult is again close to resurrecting the No-God.

I'm going to guess that TUC ends with the No-God awakening, but I still think Akka lives regardless of age. There could be no time jump into the next series and we could follow Akka and whoever else is alive back through Earwa as the No-God ravages the world.

I don't know the direct quote, but like Sci said, it was something akin to "angelic ciphrang cannot be summoned by the Diamos".

Might have been in one of the Q/A sessions (Read the topics with Cu'jara Cinmoi)

Sorry but... Gin'y?

King Gin'yursis of Cil-Aujas.
wow missed that one.

But then how does he know that it is his damnation? The knowledge here seems to be born of some kind of personal gnosis, where one ascribes the quality of Truth to the experience.

This is exactly what people feel in Kellhus's presence, where anyone who spends time with him begins to think he just might be divine.

The profoundness of the experience is taken as proof, yet this is what we've been warned against time and time again by the text.
This is pretty brilliant, and not all too different with what people do every day. In my experience, most people tend to think that if a lot of people believe something, then it must be true. Same principle is going on here, mistaking quantity (in this case suffering or happiness) for truth. The amount makes no difference on how true it is... Though I guess in Earwa that might not be true. Ok well at least the quality/intensity of something shouldn't affect its truth.

As the reader we fall into a simple trap. Since the character so passionately believes his own thoughts we assume that it simply must be true. How could so much passion be wrong?

Maybe GRRM is one of the last stands of artistic protagonism in a world drenched with entertainment - a last stand of the artist coming before.

Maybe he is, but I have a hard time believing that the HBO series wasn't simply for entertainment and money. Don't get me wrong, if I had the chance, I'd sure as hell take that contract too. Its basically free money. It just doesn't scream "artistic protagonism" lol.

Nor the circumfix - it's not a perfect cross, and it revolves around the human body (when not dismembered), so it has to conform to some similarity to any other device one might pin a person upon. Ironically there ideology must condition itself to the enviroment that is the human body (when not dismembered!)

There is more than one way to skin a cat, but alas, in the end, you are always simply removing the skin from the cat. :P
