The White-Luck Warrior / Re: Saccarees & the Dunyain
« on: November 11, 2013, 10:32:46 pm »

"Several Schoolmen sat at the table below them: an old bearded man wearing robes similar to Eskeles, only trimmed in gold; a Nilnameshi with ringed nostrils and tattooed cheeks; ..."

(My bolding above) The scene is where Sorweel and Eskeles attend Kellhus' audience in the Umbilicus, where he's floating around scrutinizing everyone.  The passage describes all the Grandmasters of the Schools, so logically this must be Saccarees.  Not much of a description, but there you go.
I didn't picture him as old/bearded, thanks for posting that here.

Though on that note, anyone have any suggestions at how many pages to cap a thread - I think people will be eventually too intimidated to wade through the 100 pages of TSA related art ;)?
Difficult question to answer. I'd say that in order to make this site more "newbie" friendly, and considering how lower out postership is, that maybe cap it at 2 or 3 pages.
On the other hand, that would be a bit irritating for those having a lenghly conversation about this or that topic. I'm conflicted.
Sooo there's my non-answer.

Well remember that Cleric was pretty badass even without his songs. The Quya are not like our overweight wizard.

Could have been a point of pride to brake a dragon without the words?

Whatever, the point is, the woman that are introduced have turned out to be very important. At this rate, the men will all become pawns. Hell hath no furry like a women scorned.
Big Sister?

Wow, could that be the big femanist slap in the face, having gotten into the good graces of a certain kind of readership? Push your shit this far and you will have a crushing uber female power structure over you? Nice to see those guys end up with some kind of damn challenge, whereas I'm not sure the rape scenes are...

Anything can be taken as insulting if you want it bad enough.  ;)
And don't rule out female-raping-male scenes (its still rape if you use something other than a penis right?)

Probably summoning of spirits. Though perhaps a term born from ignorance, as the ciphrang are hardly re-animated dead.

I don't think people will be able to tolerate a "the Female Dunyain did it" ;).

Who cares what "people" tolerate? And who are these people you speak of? They don't come around here. We're all fanatics.

or the nonmen are well familiar with how the gods mark humans.

I presume their multi-time sight would show them that Sorweel has been fucked with.

In any event, Kellhus didn't fulfill Niom because Moenghus is not his son (unless metaphysical adoption etc).  Perhaps Moe is the enemy and Sorweel is the son?
Why is there not a mind=blown emoticon?

Something on Earwa, or the Outside, pushed or rent the boundaries between, long long ago.

+1. Golgotterath is by its nature the deepest Topoi in Earwa. Wouldn't it be interesting if the Ark crashing was the distinctive factor? For instance, had the Inchoroi landed anywhere, they would have rent the World to the Outside?

Would love the irony of this.
But that's a bit off topic I suppose.

So if Bakker says gender in Dunyain society is relevant...how?  Did Kellhus destroy Ishual and herd the women to Ishterebinth for a breeding program?  Assuming they're just as intelligent and rational as any male Dunyain we've met, Kellhus could have laid out some grand plan for them involving the attainment of the absolute through crossbreeding and elimination of the Consult.  Could that be how he got Nil'giccas to work with the scalpers?

Of course, I don't know how to fit that with his meeting with Nin'sarricas.  Shit, I don't know how to fit any of this together.

Lol, you're doing fine, Wic - I don't really understand this outrageous bar that's been set as to what qualifies as 'content' around here and stops people from posting. The worst that can happen is that content-generating participation will change you more quickly than simply active-reading participation...
I understand it a bit. To the untrainted eye, most of the regulars seem to either know everything, speak as if they do, or use very professional sounding sentence structure :P. We're all just whistling in the dark.

Firstly, I think Bakker's commentary alludes to how the Dunyain organized themselves before the events of the novels, in the two thousand year interim. As suggested by Somnambulist, Kellhus has absolutely no hesitation in using the Female Few to discharge the war against Golgotterath, which might reflect something of Ishual's gender relations.
I think Bakker created this illusion that the makes the reader think they know far more about the Dunyain than we really do. The prologue of TDTCB pretends to tell the full story of the Dunyain. Bastard child, everyone dies, mysterious cult comes in and erases everything, 2000 years of isolation. End....

The Women have been hidden from us. No dunyain women, no nonmen women (nonwomen...), no inchoroi women, and until WLW no women sorcerers.
There is only 1 cult we know of that has women at the head, and its quickly becoming (has become) a major player, though somewhat ironically its main tools are men.
The female school has already proven to be extremely important.... its led by Serwa, but she is controlled by Kellhus....

Whatever, the point is, the woman that are introduced have turned out to be very important. At this rate, the men will all become pawns. Hell hath no furry like a women scorned.

Well, Curethan has a seemingly sound dissociation that either Nin'janjin or Cu'jara Cinmoi weren't of the Few.
Where? :)

I'm also not terribly sure why everyone jumped on Chanv being Sorcerer's Salt...

blame the monkey.
It just occurred to me that the ashes of nonmen and the salt sorcerers bares a striking resemblance. Maybe this is why it seems so plausible?

ETA: Another dumb question: Are sorcerers able to tell that someone is one of the Few even before they've done any actual magic? Like, how does the Mandate know which children to acquire from the Nroni, for example? Is there some kind of test? Do they have to grasp the onta first or whatever? Drawing a blank on this topic, though I feel like I remember Achamian mentioning it as some point when thinking about his childhood.

Then again as I write this I'm remembering that no one knew Kellhus was one of the Few...

Recall the scene with Maithanet and Achamian near the beginning. Akka is suprised that he knows that he is a schoolman spy (Maithanet can see the mark, but since he himself has never preformed any magic he does not bare the mark). So there is no outward change that is visible until you are bruised.

There is at least one test that we are told about. Akka mentions it when he tests Kellhus with the wathi doll. He says something along the lines of it being a test that won't mark you, and that they use it to test children for the gift.

I'd say The Prince of Nothing would make a good title for the first movie, but only because TDTCB is too long. I just love that title.
