That's some art that really lives within the books world!
EDIT [Madness]: Changed thread title.

That Cnaiur one's awesome, but I'm having a complete brain-lapse as to what that scene is. The line's super-familiar but I can't remember the context.
-
Wow... seeing Kelmomas and connecting that child-image to his works... Chilling.
Amazing, Cishaurim, Quinthane.
I too would pay for art of Earwa - you artists should seriously consider consolidating a number of instances, we can collect fan-fiction and essays, and see about publishing it to support Bakker. It's not so impossible/improbable.
Wilshire, when Cnaiur kills Panteruth when Cnaiur and Kellhus are climbing into the Hethanta Mountains :). Panteruth also initially captures Serwe when raiding the Empire.

Convinction is inspiring, Quinthane.
That is awesome, FB. Circumfix tattoo is an especially nice touch.
-
ETA: Hah, Quin, I've wondered before if anyone else interpreted Certainty as being a sort of katana-esque weapon. Seemed to fit with the style of the Dunyain for some reason (in my head, anyway).
TY Madness.

Nice wracu, FB.
"...with its curiously curved pommel." pretty much has to be katana-style.
-
I love your depictions of the Gnosis.
ETA: Hah, Quin, I've wondered before if anyone else interpreted Certainty as being a sort of katana-esque weapon. Seemed to fit with the style of the Dunyain for some reason (in my head, anyway).
Is there another sword that someone as noble as Kellhus would wield? Not picturing him with a huge broadsword lol.
Awesome Wracu btw.
-
Well to my knowledge, the blade itself (lol) was never actually described, only the pommel as being oddly curved (and, correct me if I'm wrong, but the pommel refers to the base of the hilt and is meant to avoid slippage as well as acting as a counter-balance, which in-and-of-itself is not particularly descriptive of a katana). I actually originally envisioned it as something like the Chinese jian, but with a long, curved pommel. Then, at some point, my mental image morphed into a katana. Truth be told I don't really know what exactly Bakker's going for with the descriptions of Certainty.
-
Kellhus's sword looks like my username.
-
Jurble?! Is that you?!
-
Not sure if Quinthane already linked this one (http://princeofnothing.wikia.com/wiki/File:PoN.jpg) already, but UGHHHH, look at the bottom left corner! Urrgh! That's got creepy in it!
-
Dear Lord these are amazing! I've been hoping for someone skilled at artwork to create some of these moments.
Seriously, the Gnosis image is EXACTLY as I pictured Akka in the mountains when he unleashes a Bar of Heaven!
Love the Moenghus image too! I picture him a bit older and more wrinkled, but other than that spot on to my imagination! Is it alright if I use this image for an avatar? My PS3 network name is Moenghus and I would love to use this in the future.
Any chance of requesting images too? I'd love to see a scene from one of Kellhus' Pragma flashbacks, or Akka escaping from the Scarlet Spires! Oh, and how about one of Incariol or Mekeretrig? So cool! Please, keep'em coming!
-
Great stuff. I really like 'Gnosis' and Kellhus and Cnaiur.
When you get the chance here are some other vivid scenes:
- Titirga arriving at Shaeönanra's abode with the Diurnal.
- Akka vs. the Demon
- Cleric impaled by a cant of concussion
- Esmenet possesed by Aurang
- Leweth is abandoned by Kellhus
- Kelmomas killing Samarmas, or watching the beetle crawling on the floor
- The assassination of Maithanet by an agent of fate
- Seswatha and Nau-Cayuti at Golgoterrath
- Achamian and Mimara in Ishual
Those last two might look a bit similar. Purely coincidence. ;)
-
Kellhus v. Moenghus Probability Trance Stare-down
-
Lol - I am grateful for what has been drawn at all. Thanks most recently to Somnambulist, Quinthane, and FB for gracing us.

Yes indeed, we have been spoiled in this thread! Thank you, all 8)

I have to ask. In redux/your avatar did you purposefully draw the head and shoulder to make empty space between the head and shoulder to look like the head?
-
did i intend the negative space around the dragon to form another dragon? no. i did not.
but now that you point it out...it does, kinda doesn't it.
so...yes. yes i did.
-
Hmm... negative space. Thanks for the art learning :).
I actually find that internalizing these concepts help my artistic confidence and definitely the way I exercise drawing with my hands.
-
the way I exercise drawing with my hands.
'splain.
-
I'm a communicative asshole who feels like pushing their strange brand of communicating onto everyone?
For clarity & disclosure ;).
I sketched when I was a child. My Dad's side of the family is extremely artistic. I only picked it up again after I became ambidextrous so I mostly draw with my left-hand (as it has got catching up to do). But concepts that artists learn (like distinguishing negative and positive spaces, which I recently found online) don't seem to be anything I might have spontaneously described myself. And to think in those terms allows me to see more of the concrete pieces before the vague whole - literally changes how I practice (exercise because it is) drawing with my hands (using holding a pencil or two ;)).
Lol, sorry, Quinthane. Nothing crazy cool.
-

Unintentional!?!?! Mind KA FRICKIN' BLOWN googleplex!
I think...I think you have to show that one to Bakker and emphasize that inverse element!
-
"So...you called?"
http://princeofnothing.wikia.com/wiki/File:So_you_called.png (http://princeofnothing.wikia.com/wiki/File:So_you_called.png)
-
Who are those two?
-
Kellhus and Moenghus, friend. Title says it all.
-
That would have been by guess but the beard threw me off. Never pictured a Kellhus looking that disheveled.
-
"So...you called?"
Great title for a great sketch!
-
It's terrible of me not to remember, but is that meeting after Kellhus has been on the circumfix? That'd explain the beard.
-
i think Kelhus leaves Ishauil clean shaven....but from that point on sports facial hair. i know it would always tug against my image of him (i've always seen him without a beard and preferred it so) when Bakker would make mention of it.
conversely, i have the damnedest time seeing Cnaiur without a black mustache/goatee (Attila the Hun style but short and kept close). but i think the Scylvendi typically didn't have much truck with facial hair fashion. help me out. anyone remember?
-
I'm not sure that Bakker highlighted Scylvendi facial styles - I seem to remember (and I could check but I'm lazy) that the Ainoni approved of beards, despite fancying the cosmetics, which I thought stylistically interesting and the Nansur favor clean-shaven.
I like that Kayutas has a buzzed head, seemingly. I remember erroneously decideding deciding [:o] that Cnaiur was shaved until my second reading.
-
"Is the sun empty?"
http://princeofnothing.wikia.com/wiki/File:Look..png (http://princeofnothing.wikia.com/wiki/File:Look..png)
-
I always pictured everyone without beards for most of the series, except the skin-eaters. I cannot site any specific reference though, so I'm probably just wrong.
As for the Scylvendi, I suppose it would either be clean shaven or none at all, not somewhere in between. I can't see the people of war caring much either way, but with their obsession with manlyness and their proximity to the North (i.e cold) I'd guess that its more likely that they have beards.

btw I'm wondering if we should make a Curated Artwork page with comments locked that has only the artwork posted (with author's title/description). It would leave this board alone completely, since the feedback and comments are important, but this board is progressing so quickly that some stuff might be getting lost.
Thoughts?

I agree. While I believe the artists enjoy the feedback, I feel that some of the art will be lost in the sea of reviews and praise.
-
Done.
Artists, you have only to ask and I'll remove any of the art or commentary that was wholesale quoted into the Curated thread. Your work is your own. Thank you for lending us your imaginations :D.

Amazing dude. I like the design of the wracu (I too was going for a sort of crest on their head, almost ceratopsian, though in in mine it just ended up looking like a horn). Can I ask what your process is and what tools you use? Do you start with a hard copy and then transfer to the computer, or is it all digital? What programs?
the beginnings of the nonman battle with kel.http://fav.me/d6rq6vq (http://fav.me/d6rq6vq)
Sweet, looking forward to the finished version. That's a really good choice of scene to render as well, it's actually one of my favorite from the series (I remember, the first time reading it, that particular scene was the point where I thought to myself, "Alright, this is really fucking cool". The depiction of the Nonman, the cloak of faces, the sranc, the awesome portrayal of magic, and of course all the mysteriousness of the series so early on, all combined into something very compelling and unique).

Most of my art starts out as a sketch on paper, trying to find the right pose, layout, etc. (right to my eye, at least). Once I'm happy with it, I'll scan it and use it as a template in Photoshop. Everything is painted over the top, in multiple layers. I usually (but not always) start dark and build up to light colors. Sometimes, like in this one, I'll import a partially finished image into Illustrator to wrap complex art (like the sigils on the hems of his robes), then export that art to composite back into Photoshop. Sometimes I'll use 3D apps like Strata to model and render elements to then incorporate into the image. Photoshop is my staple, supported by those others. Custom brushes allow me to build the different elements and textures. I use multiple opacity settings throughout to achieve the effects I want. From start to finish, this one took about a week of 2-3 hours a night. Come to think of it, the Swayali was about the same.
Anyway, hope that was helpful. And thanks for the kind words! I definitely appreciate it. Cheers.

I'm probably going to do another one of these. I fucked up the proportions really bad, having intended to make his frame much bigger and stronger looking, and less of a bobblehead. I also wanted his hair to be gray, but I messed that up when touching stuff up digitally. Titirga's literally one of my favorite characters though, which is amazing considering how little "screentime" he had. Just an awesome character.

Love these schoolmen drawings.
Any chance you'd want to do any of the bigger schoolmen battles? Like Akka's run in with the SS at the Library, or Akka vs. Iyokus or Akka demolishing the building looking for him. Elazarus vs Indarua's Water Bearers. Kellhus over Shimeh.... These are the images that haunt my dreams, now in black in white renderings a la Quinthane

Amazing stuff, guys. Please keep it up.
I particularly like Som's Cishaurim. The point of light exploding from the forehead is very much how I picture it.
If anyone is feeling particularly daring, the Cishaurim assassination of the SS grandmaster would be really cool.

Really digging that one Quin. I like the design of his kilt/skirt thing.

Interesting! I hadn't thought of doing the Tusk. Working on Kosoter right now, but since you requested, I'll do that one after. Should be fun!

i'm re-reading TDTCB for the 2,433 time and got to the chapter where Proyas sees the Tusk for the first time and decided that i would make that my next attempt but when i finished the chapter i realized unerringly that that image is dead-red center of your wheel-house.

I think we should have lots of interpretations, Francis!
And I'm sure Scott has looked over this thread.
God-like takes a night off.
How can he, when measure is unceasing?
-
I'd imagined the captain as more clint eastwoody, but even more miserly with any expression which is not one of dominance, and an even dryer, more leathery skin. And a broader face - more armoured, like a tank. A lack of passion except for the aura of a calm before the violent storm - thus the surprising rise of his zealothood.
-
FB, please don't stop posting your art. I have been inspired by some of your work, especially the gods with their strange symbology. I love those. I believe we're all accepting here, and are hungry for any and all artistic interpretations anyone is willing to share. I personally would consider it shameful if something I posted prevented anyone else from sharing. That's certainly not my intention at all, ever. There seem to be so few of us tackling the wild, wacky world of Bakker through art, it would sadden me greatly to lose any of those talents. Come on, brother!

Hah, thank you guys, much appreciated! I guess I'm my own harshest critic. Gets hard to see the forest from the trees at times (same thing happens to me with writing, though much, much worse, where I basically get caught in a never ending loop of editing the same crap and altering minute details until I finally say fuck it and call it "done" -- I also hate re-reading my own stuff for that same reason).

Yeah I like that a lot.
Actually be meaning to ask this somewhere, but is Sarl still alive and following Akka/Mimara around as of TUC? Was wondering that the other day. I was imagining some crazy Sarl POV of him having weird delusional conversations with Kosoter's head.

Pretty sure Sarl is Gollum. And yes, Sarl has Kosoter's head hanging from his beard because he braided their hair together... (Titirga ;))

That book cover worthy, I think! Complete with haunting spectres...
Though I'd always imagined it as much thicker, for some reason. Like at it's thickest, as wide as a garbage can. Though on reflection, I have no idea what sort of animal such a thing might come from? Heh, what does it say that I imagined it so big?
-

You make a good point. I guess I always assumed it was a mammoth tusk. Can't remember specifically if the books ever said, but that's what I always imagined, anyway. But, knowing Bakker (or not knowing him, as the case may be), you could very well be right.
-
There is a question, I think, on the old Zombie Three Seas (which doesn't seem to be totally functioning right now).
Something about whether or not megafauna ever existed in Earwa/Eanna.

my fave so far, FB.
-
Yeah, FB, that is great! Also one of my favs. Great job.
-
isn't the base of the tusk like 8 or 12 ft in diameter? I think there's a description when proyas encounters it at the beginning of TDTCB
-
I've read that section many times. It doesn't give any dimensions, just descriptions of its winding shape. Suspended by chains from pillars.
-
I reread it, you're right, no dimensions, my pathetic mind's eye provided what it wanted to see, absent the text.
-
Hey, I'm not the only one then!
How phat is your tusk, guys?
Wait....
But seriously, its actually interesting to get an idea of the percieved width.
Though man, to get alot of writing on the thing, it probably needs to be fairly thick.
-
Depends on the size of the tusk. Before doing the pic, did some googling. Some mammoth tusks were relatively small (akin to elephant tusks), while others looked like they could have been over 10' long. Also depends on what form the Thoti-Eannorean language took. Many early languages were pictographic or symbolic in nature (i.e., cuneiform, hieroglyphs, etc.), and not necessarily phonetic. You could pack a lot of meaning into very few symbols.
-
I reread it, you're right, no dimensions, my pathetic mind's eye provided what it wanted to see, absent the text.
I would have agreed with you fully before hand. Seems like there should be some dimensions for it somewhere... Is the size of the room or building ever described?
When you read the passage, if you thought of the Tusk as small, do the descriptions make sense?
-
When you read the passage, if you thought of the Tusk as small, do the descriptions make sense?
So, when I did this, I had in mind it would be around 10-12 feet long. I realize there's nothing in the picture to suggest that kind of scale. The specters in the back shouldn't be used for a sense of scale, as they're not 'real-world' references. The pillars also can't be used, because there's nothing to suggest their scale, either. I'm not a professional illustrator, so these were oversights on my part in terms of the composition. Anyway, fail on composition. I did the pictogram illustration afterwards to suggest the kind of scale I had in mind, located here http://spiralhorizon.deviantart.com/art/BreakingtheGates-413192946 (http://spiralhorizon.deviantart.com/art/BreakingtheGates-413192946)
blah
-
I really liked the Sumerian style, Somnambulist.
Highly entertaining.
-
For what it's worth, I always imagined the Tusk as being gargantuan, however this discussion took place on Westeros and I believe HE concluded that the entire Old Testament could fit onto a real world mastodon tusk (or something, I'm not sure exactly, but he did math, so I trust him). :)
-

Sweet post.

Somn - That is really outstanding. Not at all dissimilar to how I picture both races in my head when I read. Cheers.
-
Curethan: YES! That smells like victory! Seriously awesome, thanks.
Wilshire and Triskele: thank you very much!
I appreciate the comments. I have a long way to go, but feel like I'm on my way. If I could do this stuff all day, every day, I'd be a very happy boy!
-
Awesome as hell Somm. I love the design of the Nonman, and the bashrag actually comes pretty close to my own mental image.
-
I think you can use the pillars - just check out the various temples in the world and get an average idea of the girth of their pillars. It typically seems to be enough to hide a person inside, if they have any at all. Sure, an author doesn't have to go with that. But then again maybe everyone on Earwa have big, obvious gill lines on their necks as well and weve just assumed otherwise? There's plenty of discrepancies an author could have. But they are discrepancies (basically screwing up genre)
Sure, the pillars in the book could be bigger, but were defending whether the tusk is smaller than we thought. Bigger pillars just mean a bigger tusk (not a problem in regards to what were defending).
-
Cheers, FB!
-
Actually, this brings up something I've wondered about before. If sranc are based off of Nonman bios (which I assume is just an in-universe word for DNA), then are the bashrag also based off Nonmen? I pictured them quite similarly to Somm's rendition, though with the pale skin of sranc or Nonmen. And yet, the bashrag are described as decidedly hirsute, it seems. Perhaps they were based off of the human bios? I wonder then if their multiplied organs are a reflection of mankind in some way, just as the sranc's distorted features are a mockery of Nonmen?
Dunno, rambling something fierce here, lol.
-
sranc based off quya, bashrag based off ishroi?
I've always thought the bashrag were based off the nonman art and it's triplicate fetish.
-
I've always thought the bashrag were based off the nonman art and it's triplicate fetish.
Good thought. Ties in very nicely, though I'm going to substitute "based off' and replace it with "perversion of", since everything the Inchoroi due is supposed to be evil (words for controlling, in any case).
-
I'm fairly sure the Bashrag are described as having human faces. I figure the Inchies just jammed 3 humans and whatever synthetic bios they use for control mechanisms into one of their 'grafting chambers' and slammed the button to see what happened.
I think 3 humans would probably take up the same rough volume as an Inchoroi.
Highly doubt they based any of the weapon races on nonman art, lol. Just doesn't seem like something they would consider if there was a 'design phase'. ;)
-
That was absolutely amazing Som!
