Two random thoughts on sorcery that are Moe-related:

When Moe meets w/ Xerius and uses Skype to bring Skauras in...the light on his forehead is described as ultra-bright as it often is via other Cish.  Not saying that is anything in and of itself, but perhaps another little sign that Moe's weakness is overstated?

Also, when one of the skin spies rushes Moe in Kyudea, Moe who is, at this point, bleeding to death (presumably) and blind (at least in the sense that he has no eyeballs), and is without his snakes, dispatches the skin spy with ease using something along the lines of Blue Fists of Liquid Fury(TM).  Keep in mind that Kellhus had trouble w/ the Thing Called Sarcellus in that wrestling match type of game.

No other Cish uses either Skype or BFoLF in the entire series that we are aware of, neh?

Curious...

- Where is it mentioned that the anyone of the Ordeal believes Nil'giccas isn't king? Serwa mentions Nil'giccas as King, Kellhus clearly perpetuates the lie with Nin'sariccas (probably because not revealing what you know for no good reason is great strategy), Proyas reflects on having sent thousands of ships towards Ishterebinth to treat with Nil'giccas... As far as whatever it is commonly disseminated among humans about the Nonmen, if they know anything, it seems that they know Nil'giccas is King.

My previous post was a terrible slip in which a typed in that sentence the exact opposite of what I meant.  An atrocity of a post.  And yet somehow so...memorable.

Haha, yeah, I meant why does Kellhus allow the whole Ordeal to believe that the Nonman King is Nil'giccas when Kellhus clearly must know that Cleric is long gone and has been for some time.  That's what I was trying to get at.

And it's not just that Kellhus could be going along w/ the Emissary's lies because it's more than that as you pointed out...several characters seems to believe that they are privy to the knowledge of who rules in Ishterebinth, but they are deceived.  Why the deception?

Aurang's reference to Ishteribinth implies they are heavily compromised, but it doesn't seem like the thing one would say of allies?
Paraphrasing: "there is little that occurs in Ishteribinth that we are not aware of..."
Iirc that is in response to speculation that the dunyain are a product of the non-men.

D'oh, can't believe I forgot to include that.  I'd agree that it doesn't sound like something you'd say about your allies.  Sounds like something you'd say about a place where you have spies or some ability to infiltrate.  And this was from the first series.  He references Nin-Ciljiras (sp) as if he's now the de-facto ruler of Ishterebinth.  So we can assume from that that Cleric is gone by this point.

Kind of funny though...why does the Ordeal think that Nil'giccas is no longer king in Ishterebinth?  On their own, I get how men would have no real inkling of who rules in Ishterebinth.  But Kellhus almost certainly knows.  What motive could he have for maintaining the idea that Nil'giccas is still king there?  Anyone pondered that?

I totally do not recall Serwe praying and having hear prayers answered...at least not specifically to gods.  Is that what you meant, locke(snow)?

Were there specific examples of her praying to Onkis or someone?

I just found this thread for the first time.  Very cool stuff.

I do have to say that I hope it's not going to shift to major Sci-Fi.  I'd prefer it remain largely fantasy with the metaphysical stuff.  The ideas about Earwa being Heaven or Eden or something like that would be really cool.

I get the feeling that most readers expect some kind of major reveal eventually, but I have no good working theory of what it will be.  I sometimes feel like some of the most major reveals won't be that Earwa is Heaven or what have you but reveals about how much we've been deceived by aspects of the plot; like Seswatha fucking with us all from the beginning.

There's something that still isn't entirely clear to me about Erratics.

Is going "Wayward" something that is inevitable for all Nonmen but just hasn't happened to the "Intact" yet?  Or is it something that they are susceptible to as a species but only some fall victim to?

I am certainly quite excited to see Ishterebinth in the next book.  The Nonmen, like the Consult, have been a fascinating but mostly off-camera element in the series thus for.

But a question there (man, WLW opened up so many mysteries):  Can Cleric's account of Ishterebinth be trusted?  He tells Achamian that Ishterebinth has turned to Min-Uroikas.  Do we take this literally?  Because he says it pretty clearly and suggests that only pride prevented him from doing it too.

We already knew that some number of Nonmen had gone over to the Consult some time ago, but before this line from Cleric, it seemed to me that we had every reason to believe that there was one still-functioning Nonman society that had not turned to the Consult.

So here are some possibilities, it seems to me:

-Cleric's line shouldn't be taken as scripture...maybe he just meant that a lot of Nonmen had gone over but not everyone.  Or perhaps Cleric has been gone far too long to have anything reliable to say

-Cleric's line should be taken literally...all the Nonmen are trending towards Erratic and have gone over.  Kellhus has sent Moe, Serwa, and Sorweel to Consult agents

-Ishterebinth has been in some kind of uneasy alliance or truce w/ the Consult...their society persists, but they're not warring to destroy the Ark anymore, and now they're genuinely interested in the possibility of the Aspect-Emperor who has accomplished such amazing things

The part I'm caught up on is that it's hard not to take Cleric's line seriously, but it's hard to imagine Kellhus not knowing that Ishterebinth was lost to the Consult.

Thoughts?

Madness - Do you actually think Kellhus will go back to the New Empire?  I was rereading the conversation between Maithanet and Esmenet today.  Maithanet goes through the thought-process of why Kellhus would leave Esmi in charge of the Empire instead of a half-Dunyain.  And his conclusion is ultimately that Kellhus does not care because it does not matter.  Either the Great Ordeal succeeds in destroying the Ark, or the No-God walks and the Three Seas will be united anyway.  While we cannot know for sure at this point, I suspect that Maithanet is correct.  The New Empire was simply a tool to prepare the way for the Great Ordeal.  Nothing more.

On that note, I do wonder how Kellhus knows what's still going on in the Empire.  He tells Proyas pretty much exactly what happened between Maithanet and Esmenet.  Can he follow what's going on via some sorcery like the seeing fire?  Or is he in contact with someone?  And if so, who?

Back to Yatwer for a moment...

As much as I like the series and this fifth book, I find Yatwer kind of maddening because it seems confusing.  I'm not sure what to make of any of the Yatwerian elements.  The WLW himself, whoever/whatever he is, is confusing.  Sorweel's alleged annointment by Yatwer is confusing next to it almost as if there are two WLW's.

I also find it interesting but confusing that Mimara says a prayer to Yatwer near the end of the book.  Is that an old habit from someone who grew up Inrithi?  And since we now know that Yatwer is real, is this prayer more significant in any way?

One of my fears about this series is that a lot of these things won't become much clearer...

Sorry, Trisk.

But do us all a favour, please, and read all of Frank Herbert's Dune books :).

Veering off topic, but I was not all that impressed with the first one.  I think I have to be fair to Herbert and realize that it was written decades ago and was probably incredible for its time, but I didn't get too strong of an urge to read on.  I do have a copy of book 2, so perhaps I'll summon the courage to persist.

It does certainly seem that one ought to know both their Tolkien and their Herbert to fully appreciate Bakker.

Y'all are blowing my mind on the snakes.  But I must offer one bit of walk-back...the line about the asp's eyes lighting up could easily be interpreted as just the reflection of other light....it doesn't necessarily mean that sorcery rung through the snake.

That said...why didn't Moe have his snakes with him?  I don't know why I haven't pondered this, but all of the sudden it stands out as a potentially huge moment.  Moe has been waiting for Kellhus for decades and his snakes just weren't up for it?????  Bizarre.  Is that an authorial mistake, or is there something to be gleaned from this?

The Thousandfold Thought / Re: Moenghus is a lying liar who lies

Sigh. Leaving a big post and then not getting any replies makes me think I'm crazy. Talking to myself. Maybe I shall work harder to create misery. Misery makes memories, memories make sane.

How far would you go, Wilshire, to see your madness made sane?  How many atrocities heaped upon atrocities?  Would you murder the very world?

Heh, I'm glad I came back to this thread.  I hadn't seen the Nerdanel.

I have built up, at least in my mind, the idea of Moe having larger designs to such a point that I'm already having to brace myself for disappointment.

One nitpick w/ the Nerdanel above:  I don't believe that Seokti is ever stated to have died.  It's strongly hinted since the Cishaurim are presumed wiped out, but it is kind of interesting that one of the few whose name is mentioned more than once is killed off camera or is unnamed in his killing.  If he's one of the five that Kellhus takes out at the end of the battle of Shimeh, I don't think he's named.

I'm still confused on what to make of this scene.

I do think it's pretty clear that Kellhus just used some kind of trick to hypnotize Akka, but to what end?  Is it so that he can convince Seswatha to allow Akka to teach Kellhus the Gnosis?  That seems like perhaps what we're supposed to think, but despite how difficult it is to ply Mandati, we don't need to believe that Kellhus speaking to Seswatha was necessary.  Nautzera is willing to let Akka teach Kellhus the Gnosis.

Another thing I wonder about...

It's been posited that Kellhus has been guiding Akka's mission in the Aspect-Emperor books.  I don't think we know this 100%, but it's been thrown out there.  Could this "conversation" between Kellhus and Seswatha have provided Kellhus some means of manipulating the dreams?

Sorry for the double post

Was it mentioned that the Dunyain could have escentially full conversations without uttering any words, or at least very few, by just looking at each other? I ask because this happens in one of Issac Asimov's books, so I could be getting it confused.
Whatever, if meaning can be obtained through gestures and minture muscle movements, should sorcery confine "utteral" cants to vocalized? We know that the language itself is not important, so why use language at all? I guess the Cish use emotion, which may not be confined by language, but I consider that "inutteral"

Inralatus says something to Uncle Holy along the lines of "Isn't it strange how we speak without actually speaking?" to which Maithanet replies "We're speaking now."

Nice random thoughts, Ciogoli.  This is a perfect place for me to throw out a question I'd considered starting a thread for which is basically that I want predictions about the Three Seas storylines in the next book.

Part of why I want to ask is that I have practically no idea what's going to happen.

Contrast that to the Great Ordeal and Slog storylines:  we don't know exactly how things will play out, obviously, but it seems we have a good general idea.  The Great Ordeal will continue its march into the ancient north.  Sorweel, Lil' Moe, and Serwa will go to Ishterebinth, Akka and Mimara will explore Ishual before likely moving on, etc...

I'm hugely invested in the details here, but it seems like all of those bits of framework are fairly safe assumptions.

But what's going to happen w/ the Three Seas?  I have no idea.  Does Fanayal take Momemn?  If so, what happens to Esmenet?  What does creepy little Kel do?  What is the significance of Meppa?  What conclusions for Zeum does Malo come to?  Do the Hundred get more involved?  Does the Three Seas start to culturally move on as if the Great Ordeal doesn't exist?

The reed throat of a serpent thing could have just been a clue from the very beginning of the series that Moenghus had become Cishaurim.  Nice.
