I came to read Bakker either just before or just after the release of WP.  I think there was an interview with Bakker posted on the wotmania other fiction forum wherein he said something about keeping true to the story he had envisioned from the start.  It stuck a chord with me at the time, currently experiencing the bloat and derailment of what began as a great story in wot.  Since, I have read most of TSA several times and grown to like it more and more.  It has probably reached the status of being my favorite series, or at least listed among the upper echelon.

Interestingly enough, that is right about when I started reading it too.  I saw a mass market paperback of tDtCB, so I got it and once i was done, tWP either just came out, or was right about to.  Post-Bakker, I was (and still am) pretty disullusioned with genre fiction.  I read some here for there, but not much.  I used to read a lot of history and moved into some "literature" proper, but now almost all I read is philosophy itself.

Quote
I read a fair amount.  30 or so books a year, nearly all sci-fi or fantasy.  Occasionally I read a "classic" or some general fiction.  I am also into the designer board gaming hobby, which is my social activity of choice though usually it's just my wife and I after the kids are asleep.

I used to read a lot more, but now, between the kids, work, and everything else, I just don't have much time.  I am lucy if I get 6 books a year now, give or take.

Personally, my hobby of choice is Magic: The Gathering, secondary is table-top wargaming.  Not that I have much time of either of those too.

Again, welcome to the forum. Always nice to have fresh blood to keep the walls wet new perspectives on-board,  ;)

Several months ago, I started casually rereading TSA.  Casually here meaning a couple chapters in between other books.  This is my first reread after finishing TUC, so I decided I should probably stop lurking and join the forum.

News/Announcements / Community Standards/Board Rules/Post and Message Guidelines
« Last post by H on August 22, 2019, 02:35:24 pm »
While previously, these rules were not explicitly stated, at this juncture such rules will now be codified.

Our Community Standards:

1.) We do not allow any form of, or intimations of, racism or sexism, nor comments or critiques of any gender, sexual orientation, political affiliation or religion as matters of disparagement, discrimination, or vilification.  In other words, don't bother speaking of, or referencing, anyone's race, gender, orientation, or religion as matters of discrimination: these are not topics for discussion.

2.) We do not tolerate threats, intimations, or expressions of "desire" for violence or harm to anyone, for any reason.  Not directed at members of the board, other boards, or any people, past, present or future.  This also extends to inanimate objects, at Staff discretion.  In other words, don't bother speaking of harming, desiring to see harmed, anyone or anything.

3.) Be respectful and polite.  If you are not sure if a message would be respectful of other members, or the community here, do not post it.  If you are uncertain what a "polite" manner of speaking is/would be, speak to any Staff member before posting.  There is no reason to ever be uncivil here.  Therefore, don't be.  If you have an issue with a member, bring it to Staff attention.  If you have an issue with Staff, bring it to another Staff member.  If you have an issue with the entire Staff, then this just might not be the site for you.

4.) We don't tolerate any conduct not included in the above mentioned that is deemed "unbecoming of the Community."  What does this mean?  At Staff discretion, any behavior detrimental to the community's existence, continued existence, or functionality will be met with Staff action.

Violation of these rules can and will be subjected to, but not limited to, message deletion or editing.  Repeat or egregious violations will result in further action, up to and including, account termination and subsequent banning.

We thank all members for their continued adherence to the above rules.  If you have any questions or concerns, your Staff members are Wilshire, Madness and H.

News/Announcements / Re: How grimdark is TDTCB?

And yes, that's why polls are pointless. The fellow that's not read any of the top 5 (for the sake of argument), might put Elric of Melnibone at a 5 if their other experiences of reading fantasy are Shannara, Sword of Truth, and LOTR.
Um, one of those things is not like the others! The Sword of Truth is actually quite rape-y, full of torture and a lot of killing, and is very harsh on everyone who disagrees with the main characters. But all of those things are a bit brushed off since the books are mostly centered on getting their simple moralizing - and, later, heavy-handed Objectivism message - across.

All that being said, the Chainfire trilogy (it's part of the Sword of Truth series) is still one of my all-time favorites. Goodkind's really great with explaining his magic, even though it's not very consistent from book to book. But he takes it seriously and has a lot of details and interesting interactions within his magic system that leave other writers far behind.

I personally really enjoyed Library at Mount Char, that it sits next to Shadow of the Torturer is somewhat telling to me. Though personally I'd place them at different ends, they do end up both being rather moody and have similar themes of emotional development during hard times... However I'm not really a fan of Shadow to begin with so maybe I "didnt get it".

A list like this is really only as valid as the number of people who have read every one and ranked them accordingly (edit, went back and read your comment - this is exactly what you said lol). Given a few hundred of those people and you might get a list that was at least consistent, but it is then impossible to generalize on a greater scale, as the whole list needs re-evaluated every time a new book is added.

But, I find the attempt enjoyable, and will continue to make up words and genres for "books that are dark" rather than using words other people have made up but don't have useful definitions :P .

Edit: Also, this makes me not want to read Fletcher - I'm pretty skeptical of a book thats "way more grimdark" than TDTCB.

I'm so disappointed by voted book lists that I stopped considering them a thing long time ago. The problem with them is people not being familiar with all the available options, often not actually being that well-read, and even if they somehow are, not really having any noticeable critical thinking.

Like, The Library at Mount Char, while fairly dark, is made laughable by the stupidity of what's happening there (basically, the whole plot is pointless because the author just simply doesn't understand emotional growth, thinking it can only be achieved through horrible adversity), essentially being grimdark for the sake of being grimdark. The latter can be said about many other books on the list, too. And it's not even in the same universe as TSA, which isn't trying to be dark, it simply is because there is no escaping it and because what happens in the series has actual weight instead of being just a stylized cartoon.

And then there are people who just don't read anything disturbing, so their mileage on grimdark varies, to say the least.

The whole exercise is all around pointless and quite annoying if you take it seriously.

That being out there, looking at it as just a list of new books is how to not get toxic in this situation, so props to Wilshire!

I went back and checked... 8months later. The more I happen to read the books on this list, the more I realize that whatever it is I might think "grimdark" actually is does not appear to be what the general consensus is.

Though, given how varied each individual book's votes are, I suspect there's not much of a consensus.

Like, for example, Poppy War having the same rating as Elric, and Library at Mount Char being so low. Or Fifth Season, Legend, and Lamora being basically the same rating.

Now read Blindsight and Echopraxia and all of sci-fi will feel meaningless and boring too. You'll have no more fiction to read.
