I love that guy His curiosity, smartness, and humble techniques were simply amazing. The fact that I can understand what he is talking about(not a neuroscientist) says something about his skills as a writer as well. I am actually re- reading it now . Had many "Neuropath is actually not fiction" moments, which is kind of disturbing.

He has propelled himself into my top 20 favorite people of all time

Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel, just finished it a few days ago. It may be one of my favorite books of all time, seriously. Mantel's a phenomenal writer. Not I'm starting The Winter King by Bernard Cornwell, which I've been meaning to get around to for some time.

About to finish up The Shadow of the Torturer by Gene Wolfe (Book 1 of this series The Book of the New Sun).

Its kind of a slow burn but it feels like a setup for things to come. I like the writing so I'll probably read the next book in the series and see where it takes me.

I have finished The Crippled God. What a trip this has been! Madness, I know you are stuck on Midnight Tides, but I'll just say that it's at the end of The Bonehunters that one can really get a sense of the direction that the story is going.

Your testimonial compels me. And, I mean, one just has to read an epic like Erikson's twice, you know, to truly appreciate the seeding, foreshadowing, etc .

EDIT: Also, for the thread, I'm going to not read Machiavelli, or any of his thrice-damned critics, for a long while.

Seems like it would be worthwhile (especially, as I thought GOTM and DG were two of the strongest books of the first five).

One reading of MBOTF was plenty for me.  DG was the only book that really moved me, I read it first.  GOTM was very reminiscent of someone's Monty Hall D&D campaign.

Just finished Viriconium by M John Harrison. A slow descent into madness,seen from the perspective of a city. I know it sounds weird, and it was.

The only slog rule is to go on until you have finished #2, Deadhouse Gates.
GotM is much weaker.

I read the Malazan books up until Bonehunters I think. Then lost interest. The first few books I found ok/entertaining in general, with a few really great parts. But the series was just too haphazard and unfocused for me.
