We can only speculate, then. I wasn't sure if it was a clear answer that I simply missed. I tend to agree with Madness that the sudden increase in the Consult's Tekne efficiency is the likely cause.

Look closely at what Bakker said:

Um, Kellhus is no baby.
Do you see what I see?

Kellhus is no baby.
Look closer.

no baby.

Kellhus is the No-Baby.

Ha ha ha ha. Nice!

Yeah I felt that comment went very underappreciated  ;)

You should read the Author Q&A thread. There are answers to a couple of your questions.

I don't understand why some of you guys expected everything to explicit and detailed answers to everything in the first place  ;)
Also, what does DEM mean? It's funny how you can identify Americans by their excessive use of abbreviations.

Deus Ex Machina

Edit: Ha, I just realized I was a page behind. I thought your response was the last one in the thread! Ah well. Now you can be super sure about what DEM Means.

Maybe this one just went over my head, but how did the Scalding confirm that the Dunyain had taken over the Consult? Kellhus mentions it while talking with the Mutilated, but I don't see the connection.

Also, I will note, Chapter Three and Five seem to be cut compared to drafts - a notable now nonexistent passage missing therein - on the recommendation of one of Bakker's long-term beta-readers.

I don't suppose you're at liberty to go into detail about this?  ;)

Edit: Also, I'm pretty interested in your thoughts for the book in its entirety, now that you have the official print. I need to begin my second read-through as well - I think it's necessary to absorb it all again with knowledge of how it ends. It will paint a lot of things in a different light, I imagine.

Author Q&A / Re: Unholy Consultation - *SUPER SPOILERIFIC*
« on: July 30, 2017, 02:17:44 am »
I lost a very long and complicated tutorial I wrote for some programming stuff once, due to a website error. Spent hours writing, linking sources, explaining in detail, only to have it be a mangled mess (basically gibberish, it's like someone scrambled the letters and words) once I hit "post". The kicker is when I hit Back on the browser, knowing it would be cached and still available for me to copy+paste, the cached version was equally mangled and illegible. I'm fairly certain I wrote it correctly the first time, but perhaps I had a short-lived moment of complete and utter insanity.

Anyway, my point is, I feel for you. I'll save my many questions for the AMA, but I'll say that the journey this series has taken me on has been incredible. I read a lot of fantasy (as I'm sure many of us here do), but TSA is the most unique and gripping thing I've read, no question. I was initially disappointed with the ending, mostly with the speed and effortlessness that OG Consult was dispatched, in addition to all of the twists that left me with more questions than answers, but I'm coming to terms with the fact that my disappointment stems from not having the next series to read yet. After all, I was absolutely loving everything until the book ended. Yes, I don't think I've ever had so many mixed emotions about a book ending.

Regardless, it was a wonderful read. Congratulations on finishing the series. Two down, one to go  ;)

Mimara never seen him once when they joined the Ordeal, until holograph Kellhus appeared, IIRC. I could be wrong, dont think so though.
I think Mimara saw him in the last Whelming, though my memory is bad, he could have had already teleported by the time Mimara bypassed Kayutas and Serwa.

Kellhus appears outside the tent while Mimara is in labor (screaming her lungs out, at that) while he speaks with Akka. Esmenet appears at the end of the conversation to berate Akka for leaving, but sees Kellhus standing there.

There's no way Kellhus wasn't aware of Mimara's situation. If he didn't hear her, he certainly saw it in the faces of Akka and Esmenet.

I don't think he's the baby, though.

It certainly reads like it actually hit her, but perhaps it's just an editing issue. The sword theory is an interesting one.

But now Bakker has spoken and confirmed that we will have more qirri, yeah, more books, so I'm so fucking relieved that nothing can bother me.

Whoa, did I miss something? I saw the Q&A thread, but the only thing I saw him mention was that the series has a lot going against it commercially. That and a few bits and pieces about the new series, but no confirmation that they would absolutely happen.

Tell me I missed something!

I've mentioned to others but Bakker is well-aware of his loose ends, whichever he brings more life to later. But again I think distinguishing the narrative arcs of TAE as one book from the loose seeds will go a long way towards appreciating TAE as its own story.

I appreciate TAE for what it is, absolutely. However, I can't ignore that major series-spanning questions are still unanswered and may forever go unanswered. That is the source of my disappointment more than anything.

I am unaware of any future books, all press has pointed to The Unholy Consort being the end. Please link me to sources - I am by no means not going to read more by Bakker, I love these (Kellhus) books.

I'm not sure where the original source of any of this is, but the third series is currently named TSTSNBN, and as it stands, will be a duology. I think the lack of this information being readily available is the biggest problem. People think TUC is the intended end, and it isn't. Whether or not the series gets made is another story, I suppose.

Also, Bakker is having an AMA on August 2nd on reddit. He's mentioned that after the release of TUC he wants to share the actual name of the third series. You might want to check that AMA out.

I'm actually getting curious to know what various endings people were anticipating or would have preferred after the fact?

I'm happy with the ending itself. In fact, I would have been pretty disappointed if the No-God hadn't been resurrected by the end. I just didn't really care for the way so much of the story seemed to fizzle out to make way for the twists at the end. Even still, as I was reading it, I was enjoying it. The Dunsult twist was the only part that I didn't much care for, but everything with Ajokli, Kelmomas, Kellhus' fate, etc. I was thoroughly enjoying. I just expected it to make sense in some way by the time the book ended, which it did not. Instead of seeing a climactic conclusion with the antagonists that have been built up for six books, they're killed off-screen or effortlessly and then nothing is explained. With the next series only being a possibility, it's pretty frustrating.

While I agree with you on many points, especially #2 (This one bothers me so much), you're mistaken on a few things. Maybe I can help ease your disappointment.

Notwithstanding the other God that shows up (Ajokli) with no set up.

Ajokli has been pretty involved since TJE. It wasn't very obvious, admittedly, but in retrospect a lot of the story involved him in one way or another.

7) Then there are things that just seem to break all the rules of this universe with no explanation e.g. Kelmomas apparently able to disrupt or outright banish the Gods from the world, e.g. Yatwer's White-Luck and exorcising Ajokli out of Kellhus by standing in front of him. Right.

This is because time works funny in TSA universe. The Gods exist outside of time, which means they don't really see things linearly. Kelmomas becomes the No-God, which means he's always the No-God from the perspective of the Gods. Since the Gods can't see the No-God, it means Kelmomas is invisible to them. Keep in mind this is only from "The Outside looking in" perspective... which is why the White-Luck and Ajokli can see Kelmomas when he stands in front of them physically. (I don't understand how Cnaiur can't see the Carapace though...) (Edit: I should add this is just my theory on it. The Cnaiur thing makes it a bit shaky)

Eh, overall, I agree. It was sloppy in a lot of places. I still enjoyed it a lot, but I was hoping for answers. I didn't receive many.

Lastly...

2) Serwa described the Consult as possessing no more ferocious souls in existence, save her Father. We see Aurang taken out within a couple of paragraphs (Kellhus' battle with Meppa was more fulsome). Aurax seemed like a beaten dog (don't know if he was always like that or just beaten into submission by the Dunyain). Mekeritrig was knocked out instantly by a magic lasso. Shauriatas was written out of the story with a sentence. The conclusion of the book felt like things just ran out of steam. Perhaps if half the book wasn't spent describing sodomy, rape, cannibalism, necrophilia, and general leper licking and other fun acts, there could have been more emphasis placed on a more refined conclusion.

I can't help but vent along with you on this. The story builds up these supremely powerful and evil antagonists, only to get rid of them within the span of a chapter or so. The entire attack on the Ark was underwhelming in my opinion. I really don't like that the main antagonists are the Dunyain now. Ah well.

Having said it in other places, I'll be brief. I agree with the "What the hell?" sentiment for TUC's end overall. I was loving the first half of the book, but as soon as the attack on the Ark begins, I was feeling a bit let down. I was expecting more of a look into the Ark and Golgotterath itself, more of what the stories and Akka's Dreams had made me envision. We didn't really get any of that; just a lot of fighting outside of it and a look into the Golden Room.

Many of the plotlines that were set up aren't concluded (Crabicus, Ciphrang Assassin, Meppa, to name a few off the top of my head), and that's without acknowledging that the book creates a huge amount of questions at the end without explaining any of them. I think the ending would have felt more satisfying if it all hadn't happened so fast. However, right as you're expecting to get all of the answers, the entire plot turns on its head and the book ends.

Now, I love the way the story concludes by itself. The last line gives me chills. I think ending the story on disaster like this is awesome. I just wish that it had felt more coherent and less rushed. Keeping in mind that this is the conclusion to a series of books, I feel a bit cheated. I think you're going to get this opinion from most people who aren't aware that a third series might be written (Just take a look at the Goodreads reviews- they read much like OP's post and don't seem to know there is a planned third series).

I think if Bakker were to come out and say, "Yes there will definitely be a third series", I would feel better about it. As it stands, I liked the book a lot, but I have very mixed feelings about the ending.
